The Low Frequency Content Thread (films, games, music, etc)

I just measured it the other day, but haven't posted it.  Good levels, good extension, great dynamics, and tons of scenes with sub-20Hz content.  It's a winner for sure.

There's quite the backlog of measurements to post because they need time to be voted on.  :)  There's also that Google Doc that has all the requested movies that have yet to be measured.

21 Jump Street:

Level - 2 Stars (107.09dB composite)

Extension - 3 Stars (19Hz)

Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.02dB)

Execution - 3 Stars (by poll)

Overall - 3.25 Stars

Recommendation - Buy (by poll)

Notes - Not a bass film, but a pretty funny film.  I laughed out loud several times.

Did anyone here watch "Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey"?

There's tons of low bass in there.

For example a part of the Intro:

And a scene from Episode 1 where the "Big Bang" is shown:

Most of it is pretty low level but there's a lot and it has great extension.

Wall-E (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 2 Stars (106.48dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.93dB)

Execution - 4 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 4 Stars

Recommendation - Rent (by poll)

Notes:  A few big effects with content that is only gradually rolled off from 30Hz.  Not much of a bass film, overall, but watchable.

Limitless (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 1 Star (104.98dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (35.04dB!!!)

Execution - 4 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 3.75 Stars

Recommendation - Rent (by poll)

Notes:  Very low levels, but look at those dynamics!!  A few spots of real content to 8Hz.

Afflicted (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 1 Star (100.26dB composite)
Extension - 1 Star (26Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (35.45dB!!!)

Execution - 1 Star (by poll)

Overall     - 2 Stars

Recommendation - Avoid (by poll)

Notes:  Apparently this one's low budget didn't include any money for sound design.  Yeah, great dynamics, but so what?  You can do that when there's absolutely nothing but dialog.  ;)

The Raid: Redemption (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 2 Stars (107.09dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.92dB)

Execution - 3 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 3.75 Stars

Recommendation - Buy (by poll)

Notes:  Stuff not associated with on-screen action garners this one it's 5 star extension rating.  Otherwise, it's a 30Hz movie with almost no big effects or serious content below that.

The Raid 2: Berandal (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 4 Stars (111.14dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.16dB)

Execution - 3 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 4.25 Stars

Recommendation - Buy (by poll)

Notes:  While it's an improvement over the bass in the first one, aside from a few long narrow-bandwidth tones, this one's content is mostly above 30Hz until the very end credits.  The one scene that has those hot tones extends to DC, giving this its 1Hz extension rating.  Besides that, and the associated narrow effects at 19Hz, this is mildly rolled off from 30Hz.

I measured the Indonesian 5.1 DTS-HD MA track.

Is it possible your soundcard calibration is over compensating for DC roll off or something? There seems to be a lot of movies with big DC spikes that just don't make sense. Unless perhaps there is a lot of DC noise in recording devices that the studios use...

I enjoyed limitless. Can't remember what the sound was like though. Dynamic does seem to ring a bell deep in my audio memory. I'll refrain from voting as I just can't remember.

It's not really 'DC'.  And we do not use soundcards, we just pull the data right off the disc, all in the digital domain.  The reason for the large spikes down low is sometimes a recording does have a 'DC offset', but most often it is noise, what old turntables used to call 'wow' and if at a higher freq, 'flutter'.

The Nutall windowing we chose also 'overcalls' stuff under 1Hz, making it look hotter than it really is, but all windowing choices are a compromise...for our purposes, Nutall had the least problems.  Remember, -20dB on the chart is a 10% amplitude signal.  A single 1/2Hz waveform that makes it in due to channel summation will have this effect.  When we look at the graph as SpecLab is measuring, I look to see if there is a constant signal down low.  Then it is noise (lots of older movies have this constant noise).  But if it only occurs sporadically, it is meant to be there, or 'snuck in'.

So, my award for most completely unexpected bassfest I've watched this year goes to...

... The Neverending Story.

Yes, the 1984 classic!!

Seriously, I thought I was in for an evening of cheesiness to keep the missus happy. What I didn't expect was crazy bass through most of the film! clear.png Felt reasonably deep too, I reckon it goes at least the same as, if not lower than, the 30Hz filtered latest Star Trek!  I reckon c.20Hz peak with unfiltered roll off.

Please, someone pick up a copy and confirm I'm not going mad lol

(For reference, I watched the English 5.1 DTS sountrack on a UK BD through an Onkyo 818 at -16 with DynamicEQ enabled.  Sub is an equally old-skool SVS PB12-Plus/2 in 16Hz tune.)

I said I would post some graphs from Battlefield 4 a while ago and totally forgot about it, so here are a few:

Using a Tank to destroy another one:

post-1300-0-46732800-1405244908_thumb.jpg

The red tuff at the end is the other tank exploding, the stuff before that are the tank shots. I was a few steps away from the explosion at the end so if someone blows up a tank you're sitting in it's even louder.

Stationary .50cal MG:

post-1300-0-22301400-1405245049_thumb.jpg

I have a couple more but apparently I've reached some kind of upload limit, so I can't post them.

Those were done on the "Testing Range", so in an actual game you will have multiple of those effects at once and are basically bombarded with LFE for the duration of a match. Also, this game has huge dynamics and a surround mix that puts most movies to shame.

Windtalkers (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 3 Stars (108.19dB composite)
Extension - 1 Star (32Hz)
Dynamics - 3 Stars (24.78dB)

Execution - 2 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 2.25 Stars

Recommendation - Rent (by poll)

Notes:  This one's severely high-passed.  Reminds me of Battleship in its measured extension.  The sound designers couldn't even preserve the mix's dynamics?  What a turd!

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (5.1 DTS-HD MA)

Level        - 3 Stars (109.02dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.79dB)

Execution - 4 Stars (by poll)

Overall     - 4.25 Stars

Recommendation - Buy (by poll)

Notes:  Lots of "midbass slam," with other moments below 20Hz, but never any effects with full-bandwidth content.
