Madaeel
The scene where the witches house blows up is a full BW spread, high output effect to rival any I've experienced. I know it's just one scene in the movie, but it has me scratching my head on the 2 star level rating... Man I've been saving this movie and now this has me excited. I was watching a clip of this at Ethan's house and I couldn't believe how good the visuals were and now to hear the audio is every bit as good just makes me that much happier I saved it for when the theater is done. I'm with you on Brave, superbly crafted, quite enjoyable. These animated/CG releases just don't get the love from many of the LF/ULF enthusiasts. When Joe Six-Pack/ "12 inch drivers are faster than any 18" sits down to enjoy his two hour movie time, the Pixar stuff just doesn't make the cut. I mean he's looking for the un-rated, directors cut with gun-play, drugs and explosions, Tarantino-esque inter-woven storylines, full frontal Sharon Stone style/grill on grill cooking. So, staring at the Family Video shelf, there's Brave right by Bullet to the Head/Un-Rated Directors Cut, just it ain't happenin' All kidding aside, Brave really is well executed. Randy Thom, doing what he does. An entirely immersive experience. Last weekend we enjoyed Flight, suprisingly good to me. I'd not seen much promo at all except the premise. Well cast, spot on w/Goodman, Washington, and after the film credits began rolling, thinking to myself how nice the sound was (some tasty rock-n-roll), there it was; Sound by Randy Thom. Good film. I agree with this as most adults see these as "kid movies". I know a lot of my friends take their kids to see them and usually enjoy the movie themselves. They just don't have the A/V gear to really appreciate what these movies are capable of or realize that these movies are designed for everyone to enjoy. The time and effort put into them is simply amazing and that's why some of my favorite movies are CG movies with HTTYD at the top of the list. Now I'm hoping Brave shares that spot. The funny thing is my mom and dad love these movies and actually will come over just to watch them on a larger screen and in surround. Actually my dad enjoys CG movies more then any other type. My mom is into any type and is a Star Wars fanatic. Gotta love em. I heard flight was a good movie from a couple people and now this is just the icing on the cake. Thanks for the heads up on the sound.
Madaeel
Wow, I just added it up: Over 75 films PvA graphed! JSS You're a beast Max. Thanks again for all the time and work you put into this. I promise as soon as I'm done with the theater and have everything dialed in, hopefully in like 4 months, I'll help with the graphs. maxmercy
My mom is into any type and is a Star Wars fanatic. THIS IS AWESOME. I can't wait personally for Wreck-it Ralph.....and Flight is in the queue. It would be great if you could contribute scenecaps! I will also develop a PvA tutorial over time, so others can contribute those as well, I have developed an easier-to-employ roll off correction function. BTW - JapanDave has been putting in some overtime for the thread generating a tremendous Excel spreadsheet that will make graphing PvAs very easy. Eventually I want to change the 'Level' category to only be based on the Z-weighted SPL captures from REW. That way movies like Brave will get the 5-Stars they deserve for Level. There will be a tutorial for this as well, eventually, so folks can contribute in one of three ways in the future. Things here have to slow down for a while. I may get to graph a movie or two a week, but not the six I could do in the past, have to study for board exams. Things will kick into high gear late April/early May. The queue is only 35 deep at the moment, so by late summer it should be caught up. JSS

We watched Planet of the Apes when it came out and we were watching at -8MV and I asked if it was too loud and she said "nope, you can turn it up louder if you want". My sister is the same way. At least I know where we get it from. Forgot about Wreck-it-Ralph. I'll watch it regardless of the bass it would just be amazing if it has anything close to some of the other heavy hitters. I will definitely do some screen caps. I figure between you, Dave, and my bro I can figure it out. That's great news JapanDave is making it easier though. Thank you JapanDave! Luke Kamp
Max I gotta say it again, thanks for all the work. 75 already you are a f'in trooper. It's looking Very Nice Dave. I see a lot of your movie collection getting another spin real soon. I watched Brave in a Dolby Atmos theater and was in awe. Seeing Randy was involved and has the bandwidth I am going to pick it up. I have taken the CGI plunge, still trying to get the wife on board. Thanks for the heads up on Flight, going to check it out. Any you guys spun Skyfall yet? I thought it had great dynamics and a few mood setting scenes. Look forward to the results. Love the thread and Data-bass!

maxmercy
Skyfall: Level - 5 Stars (113.96dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (12Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.59dB) Execution - 5 Stars by poll. Overall - 4.75 Stars - The IMAX Digital I saw this film in horribly distorted the audio, just like every IMAX digital presentation I have ever heard. Curiously, IMAX Digital uses Audyssey MultEQ XT to set EQ. IIRC, Audyssey allows a 9dB boost. NO cinema I have ever been in has played reference without easily audible compression or distortion, so allowing a 9dB boost anywhere in such a system is a recipe for disaster. That being said, the local True IMAX has terrific sound that sounds very good, and is usually played within it's limits. I think they play around 3-5dB below reference, though, or have that much headroom that it could be just as loud, just distortion-free. There appears to be a low shelf applied to the film that appears to limit the 6Hz rotor beat of a helicopter in the film, or maybe it was just applied to that effect, so no BlackHawk Down scene here. After viewing, I really like this mix, but it does clip. While I would personally give it 4 Stars, I can easily see why people would give it 5. Amazing how good a soundtrack can sound when played within a system's limits....I just wish mixers would use the medium's limits as well... Recommendation - Buy. Terrific Bond film, good replay-ability. I have liked the reboot of Bond since Casino Royale. Tougher, grittier. JSS Thanks to MKTheater, here are some scenecaps of the final battle: Tanks blowing up and helicopter crashing into house More grenade and helicopter Next grenade and heli flying in background First grenade Helicopter flying to the house playing music
Bossobass Dave
OK, after a quick test, it seems my photobucket links are not working. FOH
Hey guys,Gary Rydstrom is the sound designer for Brave Nicke Thanks, I see that now, I mistakenly thought it was Thom's work. I believe saw his name attached to Brave here, or somewhere. But you're right, .. Rydstrom is credited everywhere I look for the Sound Design, and Re-Recording Mixer. It's so, so good too. I've also seen it credited that Thom is over the entire Sound Design dept at Skywalker. I'd love a full blown tour of the facility, behind the scenes and all. Flight, was a good movie rental, with well executed sound. But it's not a bombastic LFE monster,...not even close. Sure, there's the primary plot signature scene, and it seemed fine. However the best element IMO was the spot-on timely implementation of rock music tracks, that punctuate and perfectly convey the powerful emotional component at play in key moments. I've not seen Skyfall except for the IMAX digital presentation (which was quite fun). It's on the list for home rental, if I catch it in time, then I submit a vote. tuxedocivic
Thanks for doing skyfall. Saw it in theatres and the terrible sound ruined the movie for me. Really did. I bought it on release day anyways and haven't watched it yet. Hoping to soon and will then vote. Thanks again.
tuxedocivic
What you see above is accurate. This film expects your bass-managed system to put out a continuous 121.4dB at one point if you are listening at reference. It is not for the faint at heart. JSS How does this work? I don't get the peak levels. Doesn't reference bass have a cap at 115db?
maxmercy
Best explained here. http://www.avsforum.com/t/742969/diy-audio-test-dvd/270#post_18968789 Basically, you can get up to a 125dB peak. I know my Overall Peak number is above this. I think this has to do with how SPL is measured. A sinewave played that swings at full amplitude will show peak levels ~3dB greater than the 'average' or RMS level of the signal. My setup will clip at 128dB peak, or approximately 125dB RMS. I believe (I don't know for sure) that the 105dB for mains/surrounds and 115dB for LFE is an RMS measure, based on what I have measured. Basically, all 5 channels + LFE were nearly maxed out for the 'train scene'. I am interested in what everyone thinks of this film. I will not get to see it for a few days, and the bad taste in my mouth from IMAX Digital does not give me a great feeling going in. But I did really enjoy the story and the film, but thought that Javier Bardem over-acted a bit. He was much more foreboding in No Country for Old Men, where so much was kept hidden, that you could just smell crazy on him (but not prove it), instead of his blonde hair and exposition-type acting leaving no doubt of the psychosis in Skyfall.
