  1. Lone Survivor (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.42dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (6Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.01dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: This has several chopper scenes with long bursts at 6.4Hz, but nothing between there and 19Hz. One of these in particular is like the F'ing Irene scene from Black Hawk Down, but lasts for a full minute!!! See below for graphs and timestamps in the file names. Besides every chopper scene, there isn't much below 20Hz, but bass effects still sound good, and are sometimes used in ways that you might not expect from an action/war flick. Pretty decent movie, too, with some solid surround work. It didn't hurt that the filming locations are my backyard, and I recognized a lot of the peaks and ridges from backpacking them. PvA: SpecLab scenecaps:
  2. The Three Musketeers (2011) (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.76dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.51dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: From the very beginning, this one contains big content from 5-10Hz. Prodigious bass throughout, and it's definitely not filtered. A monstrous track, oddly with DC noise associated with every single bass effect in the movie. However, that 4Hz spike is legit, and not just one scene or effect. PvA:
  3. I understand not being able to consume all the new releases so quickly. Sorry if you can't make the new release polls before they close, but please do comment on each movie's polling thread when you do finally watch the movie. Your insights and experience are always appreciated. Also, luckily there are a lot of older movies that are getting measured that I'm sure you've seen!
  4. Seal Team Eight: Behind Enemy Lines (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (112.45dB composite) Extension - 4 Star (13Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (27.43dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Avoid (by poll) Notes: Lots of stuff from 10-20Hz, but the bass effects are clearly reused frequently throughout the movie, which seems cheap. It even goes so far as to have the exact same 20s bass effects sequences at three different parts. Terrible movie. PvA:
  5. Devil's Due (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.5dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (31Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.35dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 2.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Very steeply filtered at 39Hz. PvA:
  6. The International (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 1 Star (104.91dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (16Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.19dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Hardly any bass until the second half of the movie. Low levels; only average extension. PvA:
  7. I'll measure whatever I can get. Unfortunately, Goldeneye in Blu-ray isn't on Netflix. Die Another Day and The World Is Not Enough are, though. As for Lone Survivor, if people have sealed subs and don't get serious excursion and pressurization from their subs in the noted scene, they either have severe roll-off in their signal chain or not enough subs. It's legit.
  8. They're right at 3cuft each, each with dual FiCar SSD-15 - the old version. Bosso gave me a great deal, as they were lightly used in testing of his early Raptor (or whatever they were called) designs. He's on the list, but I can only get one or two on BR from Netflix.
  9. I only had one passive, ported 2011 Captivator, and I totally do not miss it even slightly. It was a good ported sub - JTR makes high quality everything. But, giving about $100 more than what I sold the Cap for got my current setup that outclasses it by a mile in both capability and looks. DIY sealed was a huge upgrade for me. HUGE! I thank many of the knowledgeable guys around here for providing the info to push me in that direction - bosso, penngray, ricci, FOH, maxmercy, Mark Seaton, etc. I couldn't really fathom how big of an upgrade it was until I had measured and EQ'd the sealed subs flat to below 5Hz and started to critically view demo scenes and rewatch movies. The difference is night and day, but I would never have known without being able to A/B compare the ported Cap to the sealed dual opposed in my own room. Funny thing, too - having dual subs didn't smooth my in-room response at all. I have a terrible room, but, with thoughtful use of EQ, it sounds as good as it can.
  10. Also remeasured Gamer (jumped from a 4 to 4.5) and LOTR:TTT Ext (jumped from a 3 to 3.75). I have all the Resident Evils, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Colombiana, Unstoppable, The International, and Devil's Due measured. I'll be posting those in the coming week. Not many great upcoming releases to speak of besides Lone Survivor and Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit - both have very solid numbers.
  11. Pain and Gain (7.1 TrueHD) Level - 3 Stars (109.91dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (19Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.63dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Tons of very strong midbass slam. Steeply filtered from 24Hz on down, but an unexpectedly dynamic mix! Pretty mediocre movie. PvA:
  12. I Am Number Four (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.9dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (28Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.97dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 2.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) PvA:
  13. Toy Story 3 (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.1dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (13Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.68dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) PvA:
  14. Toy Story (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.52dB composite) Extension - 2 Stars (24Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.7dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.25 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: A good start to this fun trilogy, with lots of bass for its time (1995). PvA:
  15. Hanna (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.08dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (9Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.1dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Very solid use of the low frequencies in this one, with serious midbass. Huge 10Hz hits, and lots of < 20Hz stuff besides. The movie has a bunch of bass content, and it's not a terrible movie, either. PvA:
  16. Bee Movie (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 2 Stars (106.54dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (14Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (36.28dB!!!) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Holy guacamole, look at those dynamics!!! I'm a big fan of this one. Though it is generally low level - I had to run it +7 above normal to get the dialog the right level - it packs a punch 20Hz and above, and the bass scenes sound HUGE. Since we're talking about miniature, bee-sized stuff, I didn't need the sub 20Hz content to get immersed. Often, the bass comes completely out of nowhere and just wallops you, like in the tennis balls scene, or in the Honex factory. I'm a sucker for animated comedies, and it doesn't hurt that this one has completely appropriate bass. PvA:
  17. Vampire Academy (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (110.95dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (27Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (33.06dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3 Stars Recommendation - Avoid (by poll) PvA:
  18. Pompeii (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (110.5dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.19dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Near constant DC noise, but lots of real content below 20Hz, with some happening below 10Hz. The movie isn't great, but the bass is! PvA:
  19. 3 Days to Kill (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (110.61dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (18Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.43dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Besides one small hit just above 10Hz, there really isn't anything below 18Hz in this movie. Very steeply filtered at 30Hz. PvA:
  20. The Monuments Men (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 1 Star (102.35dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.78dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Not really a bass movie, but what little bass content it does have is often surprisingly full-bandwidth. PvA:
