  1. Jurassic Park (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (110.79dB composite) Extension - 2 Stars (24.7Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.0dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: An oldie but a goodie, at least for its time. It's hard to say exactly what version this was besides it being 2D, since it was from Netflix, but it had the Plain Jane disc printing. At least it was 7.1. PvA:
  2. Rise of the Planet of the Apes (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.88dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.33dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Lots of DC noise, and quite a few big hits down there. Not that much else to speak of in the way of big effects. PvA:
  3. I'll see if I can scrounge up Kon-Tiki again. The storm in it was serious. I happen to have the storm in Triangle measured. Didn't think it was that great. Good, but not great - it doesn't belong in this thread. Timestamps are in the file names:
  4. Thanks, I had forgotten. It's there now in the second post, right where it deserves! Not super hot, but very good for such low content. It's better than F'ing Irene, and almost exactly an entire minute long. Good stuff, if you can reproduce it!
  5. The Lego Movie (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.44dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (18Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.71dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Nothing in this one's sound design really stood out as a glaring weakness, which probably means it was pretty decent. The bass never presented as exemplary, but neither was it terribly lacking aside from the complete removal of anything in the bottom octaves. I found the movie to be less awesome than the main song would have you think, but still watchable. PvA:
  6. I've never even heard of it, but I'll add it to the list. In the future, there's probably no reason to add movies that have been really disappointing for bass. If they don't rate for you, the probably don't rate for us. I mean, we could start adding movies made before 1980, and lots of romcoms, but what's the point?
  7. Welcome. SpecLab tutorial is posted in this forum at: http://data-bass.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/19-speclab-waterfall-scene-capture-tutorial
  8. They're in the queue (see the Google Docs for requests) but I haven't gotten them from Netflix yet. Lots to go through.
  9. Resident Evil: Retribution (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (112.46dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (24.77dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Deep content near DC from the beginning. Most of the hot content is around 18Hz, but there's plenty below that, too. Completely over-the-top bass in every scene, resulting in low dynamics. PvA:
  10. Resident Evil: Afterlife (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (112.19dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.63dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Just like the 2nd one, there's deep content present in the beginning of this one, and it's used throughout for various effects. Very hot content below 5Hz in one scene near the middle, and one 20min before the end. PvA:
  11. Resident Evil: Extinction (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 4 Stars (111.02dB composite) Extension - 1 Stars (28Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.76dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: After the 2nd one's great extension, this is a real disappointment with what appears to be a near brick-wall filter starting at 32Hz. PvA:
  12. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (5.1 LPCM) Level - 5 Stars (113.04dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (3Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.75dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Right from the beginning, very hot content below 10Hz. That deep stuff continues in some later scenes, but most of the rest of the movie is above 30Hz. PvA:
  13. Resident Evil (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 1 Star (104.57dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (11Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (23.09dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 2.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: One effect with loud content below 28Hz, otherwise rolled off starting at 32Hz. Most content above 30Hz. PvA:
  14. Just ask. I think it's safe to assume we have all the movies that have been rated, or we can get them from Netflix/friends.
  15. I didn't like either film, and the mixes are as described for bass. I can't get into constant rumble, but of the two, Non-Stop is probably better bass.
  16. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.71dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (11Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.36dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Exactly one scene goes below 20Hz with any authority, and only one effect in that scene. Not a whole lot of BIG effects in this one, and the movie is only so-so. PvA:
  17. Non-Stop (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.46dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (5Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.38dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: One scene with loud content <10Hz, right at the beginning. The rest of the movie is constant bass, but not many loud effects, and only one other scene with hot content below 35Hz. PvA:
  18. Trollhunter (Norwegian 5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.25dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (2Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.5dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: I'm a big fan of this movie. The film is good and the mix is legit. PvA:
  19. Sunshine (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (107.66dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (24.01dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Only moderate levels, but completely full-bandwidth effects throughout. Surprisingly terrible dynamics, though, and it's not like the movie has nonstop action or really high levels that would prevent better dynamics. PvA:
  20. gdffg... The biggest issue I see is that your graphs are too hot. In SpecLab, goto Options-->...part 2:Ampl-Range and change the offset to 5. That will help a bit. There's also a tutorial in the AVS Master Bass list thread (the most recent one) for getting and measuring the digital bits off the disc without any sound card involved. The poster is "desertdome," and if you search that thread for posts by him you should find it. That will also eliminate your need for proper calibration of any equipment. Sunshine has been measured, and I'll post it now.
  21. It's sappy for sure, but well-made and worth watching as long as you don't have expectations of a gruesome action war flick. I grew up with horses, so it's silly and hard to watch because it's so totally unrealistic, but it's not a bad movie, per se.
  22. War Horse (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 5 Stars (113.21dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.2dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 5 Stars!! Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: We might have found our next 5-Star movie, folks. When I first viewed it and commented at AVS (my embarrassing posts to be found here and here), I had a single ported sub. On a review of the BR from Netflix last night with a lot more sealed horsepower (hah), I found out what I was missing - a TON. I have to eat a lot of crow on this one because I was wrong, and War Horse is an absolute MONSTER bass movie! From the outset, the effects in War Horse are full-bandwidth, with a ton of deep content from 5-10Hz and above. Though it doesn't skimp on midbass by any means, many of the biggest effects seem to have content to DC. The war scene starting around the 1hr30min mark is spectacular! Fantastic sound design overall, with very immersive and convincing surround work. Gary Rydstrom and his team did quite an amazing job, coupling huge levels with great extension and superb dynamics! This is worth rewatching before you vote, as it's a pretty decent movie to boot. PvA: SpecLab scenecaps:
  23. Unstoppable (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.52dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (17Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (27.4dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Crazy amounts of bass above 30Hz, but steadily less below that. This one just didn't bring the bass unless you think you hear rather than feel a half-mile long runaway freight train. When I had ported subs, I thought this was really good. Now, with sealed, I realize what it was missing. PvA:
  24. Yep, Minority Report is in the 3.25-Stars list. Can't say I'm a fan of either TDKR or Unstoppable (which I just measured and will post in a minute), but the ambient and surround work on Lone Survivor is pretty great. I also have measurements of what may become the next full 5-Star movie! It's not a new one, but I'll post in a minute.
  25. Robocop (2014) (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.62dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (14.7Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (27.27dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Not much about this one stood out, except for the large amount of effects at 17Hz in two scenes. Otherwise, the bass content isn't that much of an improvement over the original in terms of measurements. The remastered original was measured here. PvA:
