lukeamdman
This build was the first to be added to the "DIY Showcase" on the Acoustic Elegance website: http://aespeakers.com/dual-ae-td18h-mains-and-td15m-center-channel-by-lukeamdman/ The goal of this project was to combine the best attributes of all the high quality speakers I’ve heard over the years and see if I could make something even better. I also wanted a speaker that I wouldn’t feel the need to upgrade from after only a few years, so I needed a combination of tremendous output, ultra-low distortion, and ‘full range’ playback capabilities well beyond reference levels. These needed to handle music solo without the need of subwoofers to augment the low end, and my standards for bass are incredibly high! Powering the (4) TD18H+ drivers is a Crest CC4000, and powering the BMS coaxials is a Lab Gruppen IPD 2400. Final cabinet tune ended up being 25hz. Crossover point is 450hz. Final outside dimensions of the boxes: Width: 25"Height: 29.5" (tops and bottoms are doubled up on MDF (1.5" thick))Depth: 29.25" (front baffle is 1.5" thick) Ports: (2) 11.375" wide, by 1.5" tall, by 8.5" deep per box (depth includes 1.5" baffle). Once stacked the speakers are 75" tall.

Ricci
I gotta hear those sometime Luke. I already know how the TD18's and 15's sound and the BMS coax's, just not all together like that. I need to upgrade my JBL cd's to the BMS's at some point.

I was testing out my new mic yesterday and was pushing these to about 125db on drum kicks. I need a bigger amp for them
Ricci
Here's what I'm rocking at the warehouse space. Ignore the junk PA cab behind the TD15's. Those are what my buddy had in there before I moved in.

andy497
What's the passive crossover stuff for? I assumed it was all active. Is one of the woofers low-passed to avoid off-axis cancellation or something?

Is one of the woofers low-passed to avoid off-axis cancellation or something? The BMS 4594ND is a coaxial, so that's the passive XO (~6,500hz) between the mid and HF. Kyle
I bet four 5100's would do just the trick. No wait. Or 6 My home can not sustain high SPL. My wife is always turning down my stereo and its never even loud. Although I did bottom out my little 12" TC-Epic the other day and it really pissed me off because I loved that driver and I was being stupid with the system. ugh. Ricci
Bottomed it out like THAT eh? Guess it's toast now? I wish the Epics were still on the market. My Epic 10" was great in a car. The 15's were killer when they were under $200.
maxmercy
So I know these speakers are overkill in one of the most righteous ways......but maybe a projector and AT screen are in order at some point to keep up? With an AT screen, you can backlight it and still show people the Mountains of Mayhem that lie beyond. This is assuming your house is still standing after your LLT upgrade... JSS An AT screen is definitely on my list. For the sake of back row seating, I need to raise the center up at least a few feet which I'd need an AT screen to do as well. maxmercy
I figured you'd just make a third monster WTW for the center. JSS
lukeamdman
I figured you'd just make a third monster WTW for the center. JSS Believe it or not I don't spend a lot of time watching movies. The limited time I spend in the HT I'm listening to mostly 2ch music. That'd be $3k for something that's hardly used. Yeah I should have just gone ported from the start. The only sure way to get some tactile feedback below 15hz is to get some Crowsons. It's on the list lol.
