  1. Here's the PvA I got, looks like our scales are just a little different. I go down to -70dB. We can continue this in PM
  2. I got a slightly different PvA. What were your FFT/window settings? The 1Hz bump hits nearly -20 on my graph. Overall, the graphs are very similar. Lots of 15-50Hz to be had here. JSS
  3. Some comments on TFA: 1. LCRS are FULL bandwidth, with -10dB extension into the single digits for LCR, and the teens for the surrounds. LFE rolls off below 30Hz, a little shallower than Iron Man. 2. The fact that LCRS are full bandwidth means that effects that have lots of ULF push the signal into the brick-wall limiter that appears to have been employed at -3dB, causing the clipped waveforms. 3. The clipping is not that objectionable because we really have no other reference for these sound effects other than the sometimes clipped soundtracks from Ep IV-VI (Empire Strikes Back is the worst offender). All in all, it could have been a better track, but the film is good enough not to draw too much attention to the clipping. It clips much like Thor did, just to a lesser extent. minnjd, I get a 1Hz extension on the peak graph for this track, as there is a 1Hz spike at some point. I know it is a 'cheat', but other films have done the same to get 5-Star Extension ratings... There will be a BEQ solution posted for this film for those that need to break their houses. JSS
  4. I hope EpVII is clean, no blatant flat-tops. Hope BEQ is not necessary, but it always works best when you start with unclipped material. I am not against intentional clipping. Iron Man's repulsors would not sound the same without the square tops. JSS
  5. Or use a calibrated O-Scope. JSS
  6. Is the Fluke meter 'True RMS' only for a 60Hz AC signal? JSS
  7. Yes, clipped significantly. The numbers nearly match STID, so do the graphs. I wonder if the same people were involved. The clipping is not as 'in your face' as in STID, but it is there in any louder passage. JSS
  8. Spectre - DTS-HDMA 7.1 Level - 5 Stars (113.68dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (19Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.61dB) Execution - 2 Stars Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent Comments - While OK, just not up to par with the previous 3 Daniel Craig Bond films. Its as if they want to morph the tougher, grittier Bond with Roger Moore's Bond, and IMO, it fell flat on its face trying to do so. I'm glad Sam Mendes will not be back to direct. Typical 'louder is better' sound design/mixing on this one, with the flat-tops on every channel to match. JSS
  9. Still debating on whether I should power my soundbar with a K10 or a K20. Gotta do that Hobbit 'soundtrack' 'justice'.... Spectre tomorrow. Let down in more ways than one. JSS
  10. The film is not like the other bond reboots. I really liked Casino Royale and Quantum, and Skyfall was good too. Spectre tries to make Daniel Craig into the 'old Bond', with more one-liners and suavete' (sp?) to the point of withstanding even more impossible beat downs without any significant injury. As a Bond film, its ok. As a Daniel Craig Bond film, it tanked. I'm glad Sam Mendes will not return to direct. A pet peeve: While the bond theme is great, I also liked the theme used for Craig in CR and Quantum as well, and we don't get to hear it at all in this film. JSS
  11. Well, at least they are trying to make it right....While my Epson projector is not first rate and has died twice already, Espon sent a refurb unit 2-day to replace it both times. Thankfully my current one has only needed a new bulb after 1300 hours on the first. The more customized you try to make anything, the more QC issues and unexpected problems you end up dealing with, IME. JSS
  12. minnjd will also be helping measure films going forward, it is much appreciated, as are Shred's scenecaps, which will be included in the poll threads. JSS
  13. Been very busy. I'll get Martian measured, and start to compile a list of 2015 Best films. Good to see Martian not filtered. I do not mind low level at all as long as dynamics were preserved. You can always turn it up. 24-bit sound has such a low noise floor that it makes turning up then level a lot not a big problem. JSS
  14. I think you have to compare the prequels with what was around at the time (WotW was a ways off). Ep1 really only competed with The Matrix and Fight Club at the time. Ep2 turned the ULF up a notch, and some of the lightsaber effects in Ep1 and 2 had lots of energy in them. Lots of folks tested their systems with the ship approach intro in Ep2, which had lots of midbass and ~20Hz content, but the explosion right after was a 'roar', not a 'blast'. Compared to those 2 films, Ep3 was a total mail-in. But lets face it, they all are really un-watch-able nowadays, ULF or not. JSS
  15. Fantastic 4 (2015) - DTSHD-MA 7.1 Level - 4 Stars (110.97dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (12 Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.86dB) Execution - 3 Stars Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent Notes - 'meh' overall. No thing to really see or any new twists on anything that is the F4 franchise. While the first F4 film was passable, the second was not so good and this one is about the same. A couple of hard 20Hz hits, but that is about it. Origin stories every 10 yrs are going to get old....quick. Only I liked is that 'The Thing' looks better than the terrible makeup they put on Michael Chiklis. JSS
  16. Sicario - Dolby ATMOS (7.1 channel bed analyzed) Level - 4 Stars (108.69dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.02dB!) Execution - 5 Stars Overall - 4.75 Stars Notes - Zero clipping, and no detectable compression or limiting on waveform analysis, with full bandwidth effects and great surround use. Terrific movie as well. JSS
  17. The Japanese Track is louder (30Hz extension), the English track extends lower (22Hz), but is lower in level. Loudness wars at their best. JSS
  18. The more cinemas I go to, the more I realize that people who know how to set up signal chains and calibrate properly are very few and far between (either that, or cinemas whose management can't keep their hands off the knobs). Very sad, but very true. So many places where things can go wrong. I am sometimes amazed that every now and then a decent presentation can be had. JSS
  19. San Andreas - Dolby Atmos (TrueHD 7.1 Analyzed) Level - 5 Stars (113.79 dB composite) Extension - 2 Stars (21Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (23.82dB) Execution - 4 Stars Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent Comments - High SPL and rolled off (like Thor and Pacific Rim), but ZERO clipping (unlike Thor and Pacific Rim). This is non-dynamic high SPL done right. Good to see a a clean presentation in a loud film. I'm sure significant digital compression was used as from a zoomed out-perspective, I expected to see clipping at -0.5dB everywhere, but no flat-tops were found upon closer inspection. JSS
  20. Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation - Dolby ATMOS (TrueHD 7.1 Analyzed) Level - 4 Stars (110.45dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (26.57dB) Execution - 5 Stars Overall - 4.5 Stars Comments - Terrific technical production value here. No clipping found. Great use of rear channels, with some very strong hits in both rear surrounds. While the level was kept in check and not as loud as the loudest out there, I will take this clean presentation over a loud, clipped mess any time. The more fidelity in your playback system, the more you will appreciate this. ULF Highlight (for those that can resolve it: 1:02:00 to 1:07:30. It is there on purpose, and a small room with lots of displacement and 3Hz capability will know it is there. Midbass Highlight ~1hr 14min. If you don't have any suckouts in the 100-200Hz region, this will rattle you. Great to see a few films this year with LF extension and clean presentations, especially in 'blockbuster' type films. JSS
  21. Terminator: Genisys - Dolby Atmos (7.1 Analyzed) Level - 5 Stars (114.55dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (18Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.17dB) Execution - 3 Stars Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent Comments: LOUD. Loudness War loud. Only 0.04dB lower than loudest film ever measured, Transformers 4. Clips on every channel. Good nostalgia moments, but otherwise I think they have stretched every dollar out of this franchise that they can. Also very weird seeing Daenerys Targaryen without dragons around. JSS Terminator Genisys -Atmos track defaulted to 7.1 Dolby TrueHD
