  1. Yes it would be expensive to repair. Shipping 100lb amps is not cheap. Fans are loud yes. Input sensitivity specs should be listed at AeTechron along with schematics, etc.

    Thanks Ricci :)

I'll have to get my technical head on and read the spec sheets properly this time lol

Am considering taking a punt on getting one shipped over to the UK but it's not a cheap exercise if it is a broken unit!

  2. Maybe the real story is that Nolan is half deaf and wants us to hear it like he hears it.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Anyone who thinks an IMAX mix that is so loud that people have to put earplugs in is acceptable clearly needs his hearing checked... (if I'm correct in recalling that I was reading he setup the IMAX levels himself?)

I think this (and the various Dark Knight mixes) is a lesson in why one person shouldn't have overall control of all aspects of the sound mix.  We saw the same in the clipping on Tron Legacy as well, IIRC, which was also 'tweaked' by the director post- the original mix?

  3. Ok, so just pondering the possibilities of those crazy AETechron amps as a replacement for a (user-friendly) CV5000, wherein I'd need two (one to run each sub box at 2ohm) to replace the CV5000's stereo channels.

To ask what I'm quite sure will be stupid questions...

    - I assume that with no ability to vary the gain (attenuation) in the amp itself (it looks like only the 7562 has an input attenuation knob) all gain modulation would need to be done by something before it in the chain?  (MiniDSP?)

    - If so, how does one determine the suitable input voltage into the amp that will allow it to maximise output but with no clipping on the inputs?  (Would a Balanced MiniDSP's 2V output be enough power?)

    - Was your amp expensive to repair when it broke?  (mentioned here: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/av-home-theater/30031-equipment-failures-getting-acquainted-service-dept.html before you sold it here: http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/classifieds-audio-equipment/36359-ae-techron-7560-monoblocks-picker-international-branded-pair.html!)

    - Are the fans noisy?  They look it!

    - The PDF says that it has 'internal selection' of voltages (120v / 240v etc) (http://www.aetechron.com/pdf/7570.pdf) - does that mean it's automatic and doesn't have to be opened up?

Apologies for the annoying questions

  4. I was just wondering - has anyone bought the Interstellar soundtrack CD?

I picked it up the other day and am impressed with the dynamic range on it - I can play it at something like -10 as the quiet bits are so quiet, yet the loud bits are LOUD!

My trusty radioshack SPL meter seems to vary between around high-50s dB in the quiet bits (my noisefloor with the noisiest amp in the world in the room lol) to around 91dB, seemingly (when played at -15MV and all settings as audyssey set them).

I'd love to see some hard data on it!  (I wish I had more time so I could learn speclab, but I'm struggling enough with REW... lol)

  5. Which Panasonic are you using, Shred?

When comparing different systems there may be a huge difference in experience even if they measure equal in frequency response, because the systems are not equal in impulse response and tacitle feel properties like velocity potential.

I think I was with you till 'velocity potential' lol

Is that in specific reference to nearfield subs??

Regardless, 125dB of bass is pretty bonkers - I've had an indicated 126dB measured (close-mic'd) on a Radioshack SPL Meter thingy, giving an indicated 119dB at the seats, and I reckon it really is not something that anyone could realistically get away with unless in a detached house with good insulation properties or neighbours a long way away!!  I managed about 10 minutes of the opening of Art of Flight before I was scared the neighbours in the next block of apartments were going to call the cops :lol:

  6. Also revisited Star Trek (romulans) this evening. Great bass ride and would rate this higher than I previously did.

I re-watched ST the other week - kind of a last chance saloon before the new downstairs neighbours moved in (and seemingly never went out again - wtf?  How are they in all day and all night??  Weirdos...  )

I really do think it is a go-to reference-quality track - well balanced between LFE and mains, with real weight and full-bandwidth effects, and the fact the story/film is good is just an added bonus.

I think I am getting just a hint of the really low stuff that Bosso says in on the track, so I can only hope I can eventually achieve it and enjoy the film even more!  (If my bloody neighbours ever actually leave the flat...)

  7. John Wick (7.1 TrueHD)

    Level        - 3 Stars (109.38dB composite)

    Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)

    Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.5dB)

    Execution - TBD

    Overall     - TBD

    Recommendation - TBD

Notes:  Very solid bass.  Nothing demo worthy, but just generally good.  Movie was OK.  Loved the scenes in the hotel and nightclub.

Nice, makes a change to see peak and average lines not drop off a cliff!

  8. Flight of the Phoenix:

    Level - 5 Stars (114.39dB composite)

    Extension - 5 Stars (8Hz)

    Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.14dB)

Execution - 5 Stars - This is a classic and well done LFE film. Many demos done to this track.

Overall - 5 Stars - Only the second film to earn a 5 Star overall rating. This thing is a beast.

Recommendation - Buy. Even if just for demo material. The film is OK to good, the bass excellent.

    JSS

Finally got around to watching Flight of the Phoenix on the DIY setup, although still pre-miniDSP - better than I remember and the added extension of going sealed has improved things greatly.  And I don't remember there being a Massive Attack track in there!

Film is still cheese-tastic, though  ;)
