  1. DAAAVVVEEE!! Glad to see you're back and doing well. :)

Dude, nice upgrade! Still projector though, huh? ;) Those Mitsu DLP's look suhweet though. I see you got a dual-Raven, dual-Blackbird system. Rockin'. What is that I spy on top of the BB? :D

I really like the new seating. That type of chair and the style of your riser is almost exactly what I want to do in my room but I'm not sure if I'll have the room or not for a second row with a riser.

Still.... looking good and glad you're back.

  2. I know, I know....

7.1 is in the plans. Maybe closer to the end of this year, with a new subwoofer system to get me down just below 10Hz.

Strange you mention pans on Audyssey DSX. DSX is not a matrix system made to 'fill in' extra speakers. It mainly adds early reflections to seem as if you are in a room much larger than the one you are in. HD video essentials has some slow pans with pink noise between speakers, check it out for yourself. Chris Kyriakis of Audyssey himself said it is not a matrixing system, as the 'high' speakers simply do the same thing, add reflections. Some people like it, others don't. If you took the time to really damp a room just to add reflections with added speakers, well......I just think it is a gimmick, and likely very room dependent. Btw, how is your system coming along? Still planning the wall of sound?

Good to hear about Dredd! Maybe a measurement in the next few days.

    JSS

Trust me. I know all these things about DSX expansion. I even argued about it with a fellow AVS member here at CES just yesterday. :P I'm only going off what I heard and with what little experience I've had using DSX wides. So far I've only watched two movies: Looper and Dredd. Dredd just so happens to be 'optimized for NEO-X 11.1' which I understand is not the same thing. However I feel that either that or just being a really nice 7.1 mix gave some edge using the wides. Obviously this is new and I'll have to try more movies before I can form a more concrete opinion on it but so far, the effect is winning. I'm all for the end user experience and I get that a lot of people hate the idea of post processing and/or DSP effects. Imho, if the effect works then it works and that's that. I have a very small room (~2,000cuft) and it's quite narrow. If I can get the effect of a larger acoustic experience without it sound awful in some way, I'm going for it.

Soo... for now, that's that. I'll continue to test out the effect with some older titles as long as I have the time for it. Lol, I'll try not to gunk up this thread about it though. If you or any others are curious about it, feel free to PM me.

The mega speaker project is still a go. Only a couple things are holding me from installing it immediately. As far as getting all the gear, I basically have it all. I just have to wrap up a couple things.

    Bosso and others:

If you think that Looper needs a Star taken away for Execution to keep it out of 5-Star territory, let me know and we'll put it to a vote.

    JSS

I don't think a star should be taken away in that area. Imo, the 'exectution' was terrific. If there is a place where the star should be taken away might be in level or something. Honestly, I thought all the areas were hit properly. It's certainly no WotW but it is a rather excellent bass flick. The bass just isn't around often enough and maybe that's the real fault.

Dredd on the other hand..... whew!

  3. Just finished watching Dredd. Wwwwooowwwwweeeeee! The bass (and the entire surround mix) was extremely good! The whole soundtrack had a pounding bass score and it hit deep. There was also quite a few scenes with sustained deep bass. It's hard to tell or not if it had bass below 10hz and how much but I can't see this one being any lower than a solid 4.25-4.5 but I would even go so far as to say it should be a 5. If the surround mix was included and this were a review site that included that, it would be. For sure. Max, you have got to get 7.1 or higher now. These mixes are soo expansive, aggressive and immersive.

On a related note, I just started using 'wides' this week starting with Looper. I'm totally sold on wides and I have a narrow room, even. It really works and makes the front stage huge and the pans to the sides even smoother.

  4. Rewatching Daredevil (2003). What an excellent use of bass and ULF in particular in this movie, it really adds something and was definitely included intentional and not random.

Hahah! I just watched it too (rifftrax). Definitely worth graphing for bass. The 5.1 mix is rather good too.

Aha! I knew Looper had the goods. Even with limited extension at the cinema I can just tell somehow. No highpass filters at my place maybe? :P

    Good f**kin' times!

Max, do you mind explaining the LeqZ and RMS things in the Looper chart? Thanks. :o

  5. Total Recall:

    Level - 4 Stars (265.31dBHz)

    Extension - 5 Stars (2Hz)

    Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.3dB)

Execution - Witholding Rating until I see the film, only had time to graph while I did other stuff.

    Overall - TBD

    Recommendation - TBD

This is a full bandwidth track, but held back a bit in level and dynamics. This may have been a home mix, or not. Hard to tell. Definitely not WotT kid's table mix, though.

    JSS

Extremely decent low end on a terrible remake.

    Master and Commander BluRay:

    Level - 1 Star (259.6dBHz)

    Extension - 2 Stars (22Hz)

    Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.1dB)

Execution - 3 Stars - This is the highpass of the brilliant track that was the Master & Commander DVD.

    Overall - 2.75 Stars

Recommendation - Rent, only to be able to obtain the video. If you are able to Mux the DVD Audio to this HD Video, it would make for the ultimate version.

    JSS

Then we get this... the balls effectively cut off a monster track. The lossless track is very good though. An even better ultimate cut would be the mux the LFE track from the dvd to the lossless track of the BD. The video was average but I guess better than a dvd.

So sad. Can't wait to see the comparison between this and the dvd.

  6. Matrix Trilogy Docs are updated.

Although I agree that Matrix II and III are long winded, I disagree with the rent recommendation. These films revolutionized visual effects and were soon copied by everyone, including TV commercial ads. As well, they showed a much appreciated evolution in sound design, which, thanks to Max, can be seen in the animation below.

Like the Bible rip-off or not, I think this Trilogy is as much a must own as any other franchise in moviedom.

I completely agree with you, Dave, and I'll go even one further. Buy the whole trilogy.

    1) It's cheap on bluray nowadays.

    2) The first one, while not being worthy of much mention in this thread, was revolutionary in several ways.

2a) Consider that it came out on Easter Weekend, 1999. 1999, folks.

2b) If you think about the weird Judeo-Christian references, with Neo being sorta like Jesus, and Trinity, the Easter release makes even more sense.

2c) Taking the Foucault & Zizek approachs that all things are constructions of our minds, and that our minds' images of self are socially-constructed, we begin to see this movie's depth.

So, yeah, get the whole trilogy.

Thanks for all to all, especially JSS and Dave - you guys are spectacular! :)

Mutha f**kin' werd! I love the Matrix series!

  7. Mild and easy suggestion?

Now that we have quite a few documented DB waterfalls, I think post #1 should be updated to list the movie link categorized in star number form. 5 star movies, 4-4.75 movies, 3-3.75 movies, etc. That way at a glance someone could look for the best of the best or just see what the movie they wanted to know about got listed as.

Lol. Sorry to ask for such but if it's something I could do, I'd do it but I can't edit other peoples posts. :P

  8. Wow, that's an impressive amp. I looked at the manual, and it says 1250wpc@2ohms and 2400w@4ohms bridged. That is some serious value. That'd be great for a permanent install. The Crown weighs 1/3 though (16 vs 47 lbs), so it would be easier to transport. Thanks for the tip.

Those numbers from Behringer are inaccurate and false. The numbers I posted are the TRUE power output numbers.

But yeah, the Crown weighs a whole lot less.

  9. Scott,

I'll add the scene caps to the Superman Returns post. It was a 4.25 Star film

    Here's where I posted it:

    FilmMixer,

Do you know why someone would use a 4th or 8th order highpass near 30Hz for most of TDKR, vs just the opening scene?

I should complete the Star Wars Saga today or tomorrow.

Max, that's so weird! I never saw your SR report until today. Blah. I feel dumb. Oh well. Not bad results. Thanks!
