  1. No worries. The bottom of the pile needs to be populated as well. The best part of getting a lower extending subwoofer system is feeling and hearing what you had been missing out on..... And with the 115.1dB peak, it is a loud film. JSS
  2. Haunting, Pulse & The Hurt Locker are in the queue. 9 has been rated, but it appears the links on the first page are not working...... JSS
  3. No joke.....I'm glad for you, but.... This is really bad news. Does this mean it is 'luck of the draw' for some films, as to whether or not you get a good copy? JSS
  4. Chronicle: Level - 3 Stars (109.95dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (26Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.75dB) Execution - 3 Stars - There's just no defending the highpass. Overall - 3 Stars. It can be bumped up to 3.25 if enough folks want to call this a 4-Star Execution film. Recommendation - RENT. Decent film if you don't mind 'found footage' films, with shaky-cam throughout. JSS
  5. The Bourne Legacy 5.1 DTS: Level - 2 Stars (260.74dBHz) Extension - 5 Stars (9Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.3dB) Execution - 4 Stars - Good, but not excellent. Great use of dynamics, but that means that loud effects few and far between. Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Buy if a Bourne fan. RMS Peak: 117.4dB LeqZ: 89.8dB The Bourne Legacy 7.1 DTS-HDMA: Level - 4 Stars (110.5dB) Extension - 3 Stars (18Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.03dB) Execution - 4 Stars Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Buy if a Bourne fan. RMS Peak: 114.9dB LeqZ: 87.3dB Comparison graph attached. JSS
  6. Sky captain added to queue. Bourne Legacy has differences between the 7.1 and 5.1 mix. More later. JSS
  7. Hot Fuzz: Level - 4 Stars (112.06dB) Extension - 5 Stars (5Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (26.07dB) Execution - 4 Stars - This film leaves precious little on the table, but just not on par with the real heavies. This can be changed to 5 Stars if enough people say so. Overall - A solid 4.25 Stars Recommendation - BUY. I really like Edgar Wright's work, but others may cringe. JSS
  8. Gamer: Level - 4 Stars (111.69dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (2Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.98dB) Execution - 4 Stars, see Infrasonic's post below. Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent. Good bass film, not a great film, though. Again I defer to Infrasonic's comments. JSS
  9. Dredd: Level - 4 Stars (110.3dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (3Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.73dB) Execution - 5 Stars - Reminded me a LOT of Total Recall's sound. Great unfiltered track. Overall - A solid 4.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy. This film was a sleeper. I really liked it, and it was very true to the source material. I really wish I had a 3D projector/TV just for this film. JSS
  10. Yes, all PvA data is in Excel. PM me for more info. Dredd and Gamer maybe tonight. LionsGate had HD Audio and 3D for Dredd on Netflix......maybe the complaints changed some minds..... Curiously, The Bourne Legacy offers a DTS-HDMA 7.1 'home mix' and a DTS 5.1 'theatrical mix'.....will be interesting to compare them... JSS
  11. For those who didn't catch it due to the page turnover, here's the Top ULF movies list; http://data-bass.ipbhost.com/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=283 Transformers 1&2 are just below Iron Man. As you can see, all of the heavies are here, but Thor, Avengers and M&C BD are not, due to highpassing. JSS
  12. FOH, I am unaware of such a community for theatrical exhibition sound. It probably exists somewhere, though.... JSS
  13. Here it is, the Top ULF films graphed so far, with 2:1 weighting for 2-10Hz vs 10-20Hz, for the true ULF fans:
  14. FOH, The problem in the rating system lies in the fact that the 0-10Hz region is rated just as equally as the 150-160Hz region, dB-Hz wise..... HTTYD rolls off the upper bass freqs that films like Thor, Looper, and WotW leave in, hence it not receiving 5-Star Level. No rating system is perfect. I think the one here is miles ahead of the stuff we broke away from at AVS, but a single overall rating doesn't tell the whole story..... I'll post a ranking of films by 2-20Hz content with 2-10Hz weighted 2:1 over 10-20Hz. I think all of the heavy hitters will be there. JSS
  15. Yes, Dredd was low, loud and had plenty. I liked the fact that they stayed very close to the comic. Only film I wish I would have seen in 3D, as it seems the main 3D effects were in slo-mo, where your mind has time to properly integrate the parallax illusion. Graphs soon, definitely by Sunday for it and the other ones I have here. I'll link up Looper soon. Maybe get to watch Bourne Legacy tonight, we'll see. JSS
  16. Bosso and others: If you think that Looper needs a Star taken away for Execution to keep it out of 5-Star territory, let me know and we'll put it to a vote. JSS
  17. Bosso, Thanks for the Looper graphs! I agree about the weight that tracks such as HTTYD and WotW have in the <10Hz department. When I created the ranking system, I didn't think ANY film would ever get 5 stars, and FOTP and WotW did. But any rating system has its loopholes (no pun intended) and Looper cashes in on them to get 5 Stars. Without the upper bass content, it would not have made 5 Stars on Level. If the cutoff for extension was -3dB, no 5-Star extension. It still gets 5-Star dynamics, and 4 or 5 Execution, but now the film is a 4.25 to 4.5 Star film overall...... That is pretty crazy that I mentioned it looked a little like U:A in the PvA graph, and lo and behold, same Re-Recording Mixer! I can put together a list of the most demanding under 10Hz and under 20Hz films for the true ULF fiends.... Got the films in the mail today, but I will watch them prior to graphing, so you guys will have to wait a bit.... FOH, You ever get to see TDKR? And yes, the [Looper] film takes a dive in the teens and the PvA graph shows it, but has a tiny uptick under 4Hz, just enough to fall in the -10dB range to just get the 5-Star Extension.... JSS
  18. I know, I know.... 7.1 is in the plans. Maybe closer to the end of this year, with a new subwoofer system to get me down just below 10Hz. Strange you mention pans on Audyssey DSX. DSX is not a matrix system made to 'fill in' extra speakers. It mainly adds early reflections to seem as if you are in a room much larger than the one you are in. HD video essentials has some slow pans with pink noise between speakers, check it out for yourself. Chris Kyriakis of Audyssey himself said it is not a matrixing system, as the 'high' speakers simply do the same thing, add reflections. Some people like it, others don't. If you took the time to really damp a room just to add reflections with added speakers, well......I just think it is a gimmick, and likely very room dependent. Btw, how is your system coming along? Still planning the wall of sound? Good to hear about Dredd! Maybe a measurement in the next few days. JSS
  19. Art of Flight is not on Netflix disc service yet. But I will add it. Coming this week: The Bourne Legacy Gamer Hot Fuzz Dredd JSS
  20. Perfect analogy to a film trailer, I agree. Brave will be added to the queue, and Dredd is in the queue. What audio track did you listen to? I had DTSHDMA 5.1 JSS
