The Low Frequency Content Thread (films, games, music, etc)
maxmercy replied to maxmercy's topic in Bass Content
gstriftos, How did you get the pics to appear? That way I can add them to the 'Brave' PvA post. FOH, I will have to check out Flight, it says 'Long Wait' on the 'Flix queue. This week: The Two Towers & Return of the King. Live Free and Die Hard prob next week, and then a bunch of classics to get caught up on.... JSS- 4,430 replies

Skyfall: Level - 5 Stars (113.96dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (12Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.59dB) Execution - 5 Stars by poll. Overall - 4.75 Stars - The IMAX Digital I saw this film in horribly distorted the audio, just like every IMAX digital presentation I have ever heard. Curiously, IMAX Digital uses Audyssey MultEQ XT to set EQ. IIRC, Audyssey allows a 9dB boost. NO cinema I have ever been in has played reference without easily audible compression or distortion, so allowing a 9dB boost anywhere in such a system is a recipe for disaster. That being said, the local True IMAX has terrific sound that sounds very good, and is usually played within it's limits. I think they play around 3-5dB below reference, though, or have that much headroom that it could be just as loud, just distortion-free. There appears to be a low shelf applied to the film that appears to limit the 6Hz rotor beat of a helicopter in the film, or maybe it was just applied to that effect, so no BlackHawk Down scene here. After viewing, I really like this mix, but it does clip. While I would personally give it 4 Stars, I can easily see why people would give it 5. Amazing how good a soundtrack can sound when played within a system's limits....I just wish mixers would use the medium's limits as well... Recommendation - Buy. Terrific Bond film, good replay-ability. I have liked the reboot of Bond since Casino Royale. Tougher, grittier. JSS Thanks to MKTheater, here are some scenecaps of the final battle: Tanks blowing up and helicopter crashing into house More grenade and helicopter Next grenade and heli flying in background First grenade Helicopter flying to the house playing music- 4,430 replies

THIS IS AWESOME. I can't wait personally for Wreck-it Ralph.....and Flight is in the queue. It would be great if you could contribute scenecaps! I will also develop a PvA tutorial over time, so others can contribute those as well, I have developed an easier-to-employ roll off correction function. BTW - JapanDave has been putting in some overtime for the thread generating a tremendous Excel spreadsheet that will make graphing PvAs very easy. Eventually I want to change the 'Level' category to only be based on the Z-weighted SPL captures from REW. That way movies like Brave will get the 5-Stars they deserve for Level. There will be a tutorial for this as well, eventually, so folks can contribute in one of three ways in the future. Things here have to slow down for a while. I may get to graph a movie or two a week, but not the six I could do in the past, have to study for board exams. Things will kick into high gear late April/early May. The queue is only 35 deep at the moment, so by late summer it should be caught up. JSS- 4,430 replies

Lord of the Rings:The Fellowship of the Ring, BluRay Extended Edition: (6.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 5 Stars (111.9db composite) Extension - 3 Stars (19Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.05dB) Execution - 4 Stars - I remember more ULF in the DVD DTS-ES versions, I may run a comparo. I seriously hope this isn't the case of another M&C. But I do remember The Two Towers being the ULF king of these three films. For the time (2001), tremendously well done. Overall - A very respectable 4.25 Stars Recommendation - RENT. I will have to compare the DVD Extended to this edition, to see if a low-shelf attenuation was done, but either is a good addition to a collection. JSS- 4,430 replies

Full BW effects simply don't give good 'Level' ratings with the current rating scheme. This is why I am including ZRMS, LeqZ, and ZPeak dB numbers. Brave comes in at 118.9dB ZRMS Peak. That's second only to TDKR. I think once I can get Z-weighted dB levels for all the films, we can re-do the Level Star Rating to be based on the Z-weighted dB numbers.... Today's measurement: HALO4:Forward Unto Dawn: Level - 3 Stars (107.71dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (6Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.59dB) Execution - A lot of cheese to sift through, but well done bass when it counted, and they saved the best for last. 4 Stars. Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent. Bad acting, not so good storyline, but if you are a HALO fan, worth a watch. JSS- 4,430 replies

The Haunting copy I received from Netflix is not the DTS version, and sucks bass-wise. Stopped recording the PvA about 1:30 in. Halo:4 Forward Unto Dawn is good, but a tiny bit low in level, the 'Flix only has the DVD version available, but it packs a punch...it will be up later tonight or early tomorrow. JSS- 4,430 replies

Depends on what you mean by 'better'. By removing 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 octaves of information, you can boost the remaining information by the 5-6dB lfeman stated. Easy, and louder. It is a choice made at the sound design/sound mixing console, just like mixing with limiters (Immortals), a stronger high pass (Avengers&Battleship), or just pushing the faders up until everything but the LFE channel clips (Tron Legacy). Then there are the well crafted tracks that use the whole bandwidth (How to Train Your Dragon/9/etc) that do get just as loud as the 'it's all high-passed' films. The best mixes high pass certain effects for high perceived level (Equal Loudness Curves), and use many narrowband effects in different frequency bands as well as the ubiquitous sweep (thanks Ironhide) for heft. Broadband effects require lots of bandwidth, so designers and mixers have to be creative when trying to replicate them. JSS- 4,430 replies

Well that sucks. Like Infrasonic said, at least it was at 10Hz, not one and a half octaves above (Avengers) or two octaves above (Battleship).... JSS- 4,430 replies

Inception: Level - 4 Stars (111.61dB) Extension - 4 Stars (13Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.75dB) Execution - 4 Stars - Maybe it was on purpose, but the LF use was just 'off' in this film. There is great use of midbass at times, and this film brings the level, but the sound design is not conventional, esp in the dreamscapes. Overall - A solid 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Buy. Terrific premise, and well done. A little long for my tastes, but a good film.- 4,430 replies

Percy Jackson and The Olympians:The Lightning Thief DTSHD-MA Track: Level - 4 Stars (111.8 dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (just above 10Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.67dB) Execution - 5 Stars - This film does not want for anything save for <10Hz. But the bass that is there is tremendous. Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Buy. JSS- 4,430 replies

Brave got 4 Stars for Execution and is a Buy according to the poll. Thanks to everyone who voted! Cloverfield: Level - 5 Stars (114.34dB composite!!) Extension - 4 Stars (15Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.51dB) Execution - 5 Stars - This is a monster film with monster bass. I cannot stand the shaky-cam, but the LF in this film is very powerful, but doesn't get into single digits. If anyone thinks this should be a 4 because of the highpass, lemme know. Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent. If you can stand the shaky-cam, BUY. PvA: JSS- 4,430 replies
