Always surprises me how little bracing some of the car audio guys have in their boxes. Makes me want a CNC really bad though.
I'm really happy with these drivers. I've been watching some movies on the big rig over the holidays. Nothing has come close to making the drivers sweat so far. Ran Olympus has Fallen, Oblivion and John Wick over the holidays. I had OHF set to REF and pushed the subs to +4 over and it was nothing for them. Probably run EOT and WOTW at stupid levels soon but I need the house to myself.
I also removed the DCX's from the system and switched to the DSP in the K20's for the bass. That got me a bit less signal chain roll off. Had to completely redo my gain staging though but without the DCX's in the loop it is now much less complicated. The T3's require less overall signal manipulation compared to the high inductance, high qtc sealed alignment with the XXX's and have way better top end sensitivity and extension. Thermal handling and overall efficiency are much better as well. I can't really say it sounds a whole lot different but it does seem like these changes resulted in a much better upper bass range through the crossover region. It definitely seems like there is a better sense of attack and punch on kick drums and sharp upper bass transients when the system is cranked up. Could just be placebo but I'd like to think all of those small changes added up. If I had to guess I'd say that the XXX's were compressing a bit on the top end due to quite a bit of power being applied to the coils in that range after equalization. The T3's are probably using 1/3 to 1/4 the power.
I felt the same with my old RE's. The top end sensitivity is rough on those bad boys to say the least. I had to pair them with the JBL4648's to really get to an overall happy place.

Paul Rudd is a funny dude. I have this one set to watch either tonight or tomorrow night.

1:42:45 looks like a doozie!

How much room you got behind your screen to the back wall Beast? Just curious in case I come up that way again.
Little shy of 4 feet to the back wall, so I can squeeze quite a few things back there if needed

Well, I actually take that is great news haha

Regarding frequency response, I'm a musician first. As a bass player, I imagine a bass where each fret of each of the 4 strings has a different loudness. Into the trash can it would go. It's imperative that the dynamics come from the player and the overall level comes from the mixer. The frequency response of the instrument must be flat, meaning no hot spots and no dead spots.
It's also equally important (to accuracy) that the in-room response be flat as well. In those respects, FR is everything.
Regarding the tactile feel, you can attribute much of my system;s shake to the dual-opposed, up/down fining stacks in each corner. I can engage the 18 Hz HPF of the SEQSS and still feel the tactile response at the seats from 20 Hz through cross. That has little to do with being on a wood framed floor system, and that's a huge disparity in playback response.
Brandon's rig is set up similar to mine in the front stage and, IMO, his system has plenty of tactile effect without the in-your-spine HST-18s. IMO, he not only doesn't need the nearfield 18s, they were actually a bit annoying to me, especially during music only playback, where they crossed the line between musical tones and completely non-musical massage tones.
Yea but they are just so FUN! Haha. I agree they aren't necessary, and their largest benefit is when I use them latenight to get a good tactile feel without having the front subs on, as they travel up that wall to the master bedroom and wake the sleeping princess....
I'd be interested in your real-life reaction to using Vibsensor with your frequency response graphs.
Great. Now repeat that on somebody else's system similar to yours like Adam's.
Paul, get a video of your dad's mind being blown and his world turned upside down.
Seriously. Vibsensor measurements changed everything. Measuring frequency response is only a part of the experience, what the mic hears. Vibsensor is the other half, what we feel.
Try it out. It's free.
Did you end up documenting what the vibsensor was getting at the g2g?

Sounds like you'll fit right in then

I haven't been to a GTG or visited another enthusiasts home in years. Haven't made it to any of the big Expo's either. Slacking!
Yeah, I'd love to. You probably have a better chance than I do being closer. I gotta make it out to the East coast.
I just caught up on this thread. You guys are welcome Haha. Providence I tell ya.

I actually do have an attic storage space above the garage that would work for an IB. Hmmmm.
Mmmmmm. Already been shot down on that idea for the den area at my house. Would work great, but I'm not gaining ANY headway with that argument "Apparently" the only room in the house I get to go crazy on is the "Basement" and any additional systems in the house is "Silly," and "We need new windows." or something stupid like that....

Couple of those bad boys are gone by the wayside now! Aura and Ultra... Might could get a little premium on those bad boys. Like the dude on AVS that showed up selling them for $1k per just days after the stock went out at PE Haha. He got steamrolled.

^^^ Never thought I'd be going to buy that movie...

Wow. I'm genuinely surprised about Jurassic World. I ... still haven't got my copy yet. Was supposed to be here two days ago.
Not surprised by San Andreas. I said it was nuts and it was.... loud! Still shook the place pretty good for 20hz extension. The Atmos mix was pretty good. Does anybody on this site have Atmos yet or is it just me?
Oh wait.... a lot of youz still running 5.1 audio.
You know I got that Atmos brah!

In some cases then it seems like an actually good idea to buy the amp with the intention on using only one channel at a time.
Arguably less value but then the price/performance needs to be weighed in and compared to other products in the same price range. Even with ~$800 amps it gets pretty dang close to a single Speaker Power amp. Not sure what the range is on their prices. I've seen $2,500 touted as a general price for one or all of them though I doubt they all cost the same.
But... get a single Crest or Peavey and use just one channel (assuming you need at least two or more) and the price goes up pretty quick.
Which is exactly how I have mine set up. Left corinthian is on a single channel of the peavey, Right corinthian on the single channel of the crest, and then the nearfields on the other channel of the crest. Which now has me thinking should I bust out a third amp of some sort for the nearfields, or get a 5500 and bridge the corinthians to 4 ohm mono and call it a day?

I've noticed a recurring trend with most of these class-D type amps that they produce far greater output numbers (and more stability) with just one of two channels driven.
Is this behavior simply tied to a PS that can not provide good solid current enough for two channels with these kind of high output numbers?
That's my exact guess. By process of elimination, and talks with one of the peavey/crest designers, it is the only thing that you could attribute to the shutdowns basically. It ain't line sag....

Great data. Sad for my poor little 7.5

Wait what? You dumping the GH and just going sealed and Othorns? Or adding in the sealed to the 4 total horns? Wild son!

I think it is more likely a current protection circuit because when Josh tested at a higher impedance there was no muting with the same burst/long term tones.
So a GTG at Beast's? Woo hoo! Is Dgage mailing that amp so we can get to the bottom of it finally?
Not sure, but I will have two mariana's there to play with this time. TWO massive 24" subs.
The DC detection circuit on the outputs is basically a low pass filter that detects a threshold. It ends up being current/power related so if VLF was tripping it, it would be level dependent. While not the same circuit, the Dayton SA-1000 rack mount amplifier has the same issue but happens very easily when driving a nominal 4 Ohm load. Many incorrectly attributed this to some sort of input clipping, including Mr. Chase who never knew why the ones he sold would occasionally go into protection when driving dual woofers. Changing the time constant and sensitivity of this circuit was part of the many modifications Sandbagger was doing to the SA-1000 amplifier shipped with the MFW-15 Turbo kits.
The detail I can't remember is if the amp shutdown at beast's place required cycling the power or if it bounced back on its own? To the best of my knowledge there isn't any current protection that would cause a cut out, but a few power line conditions could including a GFI condition or over/under Voltage. With the severe clipping this level occurred at, it's possible there was some internal condition the monitoring circuits were over-sensitive to as well. We should also remember the levels the amp cut out at was akin to complaining about how a driver behaves well past linear Xmax. It's much preferred if any protection doesn't cause a shut down that requires a power cycling, but not suffering any damage is just as important.
No, it didnt require power cycling. It bounced back after a second on its own. My Crest and peavey do the same thing where I can get one channel to exhibit the same behavior while the other can still power along just fine.

For the record, if it were an A14K (which it wouldn't have been), everyone would know the reason why in short order. There would be no mystery.
Josh, seriously, I'm up for raiding Brandon's place before it's -30 degrees up there in the Swiss Alps.
Typically a 10 degree differential due to the elevation change from your place to mine. You missed the last one I hosted where there was a fresh 5 inches of snow on the deck. And that was the first week of November. And then it went back to 60 degree weather and didn't snow again for two months. Very unpredictable. I'm down to host something anytime really. I have been eyeing a weekend in November. Anyone have interest in that?

We could get that information.... and just try everything all over again! Crap that means I have to build another coffin............I mean hs24 box.

900 watts? Why would that present more of an issue than 3600 watts at 4 ohms? I don't get it. If that were the case wouldn't you always want to wire for 8 ohms to max current draw (but with the most resistance?)
-
Yea I bet that wasn't a ton of fun, but very education nonetheless. I Think the real winner here is Brian who is offering up a world-class amp at a pretty darn respectable price-point. Bottom line, you aren't going to get close to this performance which much else... I think K-20/sp12000/a-14K are basically the pinnacle for around here.... You are going to get a TON more out of these than you'll see out of a plastic behringer or even my little peavey and crest 7.5....I would love to see a single comparison of either against one of the big dogs though....
At least you know your house can withstand it though Josh!

I did not see this on here yet but it would be great to see how Xmen-DOFP (The Rogue Cut) compares to the theatrical release.
I have not seen the Rogue cut yet and been thinking about double dipping.
As always, appreciate all the work you guys have done here!!
What does the Rogue cut get you that the original release does not?

As I told you I heard it was steeply filtered. And now the graph has been released. I was spot on.
You felt it necessary to rub that in? I'm already heavily disappointed.

Also, I felt defeated after watching Mad Max yesterday evening. I literally was a little woozy walking up the steps to the bedroom. I also got some really sweet texts from the wife who was attempting to sleep...two floors up. That's how I know its a good bass movie :D Forget speclabs, lol

Yea totally dug this one. And the storyline was great IMO! It's a definite re-watch for me, once my family gives it back when they are done with it...
