  1. I agree on the dynamics, to a degree. It's the best movies that get the 5 stars, though TIH didn't miss by much. There's a big difference between TIH and something like The Great Gatsby, as the overall scores indicate. However, there's not much of a difference between TIH and WOTW or Hellboy 2.
  2. Now You See Me (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (106.95dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (7Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.25dB) Execution - Will Poll Overall - TBA Recommendation - TBA PvA:
  3. The Great Gatsby (2013) (DTS-HD MA 5.1) Level - 2 Star (106.1dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (15Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.82dB) Execution - 3 Stars Overall - 3.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent A fun remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, this movie updates the Roaring 20s setting with contemporary hip-hop from Jay Z. While not for everyone, the style hearkens back to the remake of "Romeo & Juliet," another DiCaprio film. Though not an action flick in levels, TGG makes pretty ambitious use of the LFE bandwidth. Lots of real 16Hz organ notes and fun bass sweeps (see attached), plus absolutely ridiculous dynamics due to the overall low level of the mix. PvA: SL Graph of the sweeps from 0:21:14-0:22:57
  4. Epic (DTS-HD MA 5.1) Level - 1 Star (102.4dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (18Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.18dB) Execution - 3 Stars Overall - 3 Stars Recommendation - Maybe rent if you have kids. While the overall mix is probably OK for the intended audience of adolescent girls, its level is unquestionably low, and that sharp 23Hz HPF is disappointing. As a result of the low levels, it kinda steals a 5 star rating for dynamics. Randy Thom generally creates more bombastic tracks than this, so I'm wondering if his hands were tied by the producers. Definitely not an "Epic" bass movie. PvA:
  5. Monsters, Inc. is a classic. That scene in the apartment with the choppers buzzing over is included on sub demo discs for a good reason. It's not super low, but it's fun! It's hilarious that the movie totally does "steal" a few stars for extension. The PvA is pretty mediocre, otherwise. Yet, I think the movie is really fun and uses the LFE to generally good effect. I'd vote 4 stars execution.
  6. I'm excited that Serenity got 5 stars execution and a buy rating. It's a really good flick with an excellent mix, made even better if you're familiar with the Firefly series.
  7. Thanks for the heads up, Dave. Last night I had an issue with some other content being very low level, and went back to my AVR to check settings and, sure enough, all channels were low. When my Harmony remote spazzed out recently, it must have nuked the speaker levels. That, in addition to the swamp coolers we use here in the desert, and voila. 7-8dB low "sounding." I'll edit out that comment from the scoring. Luckily, this issue with my levels had no impact on the digital analysis of the disc. I still don't think that Oblivion is exceptional, but it is pretty good and a pretty good movie!
  8. Oblivion (7.1 DTS-HD MA): Level - 4 Stars (111.81dB) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.92dB) Execution - 5 Stars by poll. There's not much from 3-15Hz; most of the action is around 30Hz. It sounds pretty good, and the movie's effects make full use of the rest of the LFE bandwidth, but it's not Gary Rizzo's best mix. Overall - 4.5 Stars. Recommendation - Buy. This is an interesting scifi flick that generally gets you to suspend your disbelief, with a few decent twists. Although not without some typical Tom Cruise movie plot holes, it's gorgeously and innovatively filmed. While it likely won't win any Oscars, it's prolly worth a place in your library. PvA Scenecaps 00:09:00 - 00:09:20 00:19:06 - 00:19:13 00:27:25 - 00:27:53 00:37:16 - 00:38:25 01:12:10 - 01:12:15 01:14:00 - 01:15:30ish 01:38:11 - 01:39:13 01:39:55 - 01:40:27 01:42:55 - 01:44:20 No scenecap, but deep synth organ. 01:49:20 - 01:49:52 01:52:25 - 01:53:00 (the score's organ is really deep, again) Finale 01:55:23 - 01:56:03
  9. Guys, the reason I'm thinking the graphs Dave produces are not line level, but, instead, from the mic'd response at his LP, is because he's repeatedly said this: With that sort of response, it likely doesn't matter much, but I guess it depends on a variety of other factors. I thought there was a pretty decent amount of ULF in AGDTDH based on my digital SL caps direct from the disc. Reasonable minds can disagree.
  10. Dave, I didn't realize all your latest graphs are mic'd at the LP. I thought you were still graphing some from the output of your signal chain. Good to know. I find the Die Hard series to be somewhat entertaining, but nothing great. I posted SL graphs on the previous page at http://data-bass.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/12-the-low-frequency-content-thread-films-games-music-etc/?p=1416. There was pretty decent low end in the heavy action scenes, but I thought that action was a little more sparse than previous ones in the series. As for options to host the photos, AVS is now allowing uploads without posting on their site, and also allows you to post those hosted photos on other sites. Who knows how much they'll be willing to host, but a few of my pics have seen a few hundred views and I haven't heard a peep outta them.
  11. Dave, what's your SL offset at? That movie really has bass which is frequently coming close to 0dB on the scale?!? Yikes.
  12. That's cool, MK. Glad to hear it. Isn't it about time to try something new for your subs, too? As to SL graphs, try it the digital way that mojave and JSS have been describing. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.
  13. FOH, it's actually that first graph. It seems that anytime Bruce Willis gets a big machine gun in his hands, it's reinforced by some decent ULF. Actually, the whole movie has a fair amount. Unfortunately, that doesn't make up for it being a pretty poor movie. Its rewatchability ain't very high.
  14. Here are some SpecLab scenecaps from A Good Day to Die Hard. The high-caliber machine gun fire gets heavy ULF treatment. I noticed a few parts where there appears to be clipped content in the LFE channel, but it wasn't obvious to me when listening. All timestamps are approximate. "OK, let's go!" 0:36:25 - 0:37:05 "Who's next?" 0:52:04 - 0:52:37 0:52:55 - 0:53:21 0:53:38 - 0:53:58 0:54:30 - 0:55:30 1:25:48 - 1:26:02 "Yippie-kai-yay M'fkers" 1:28:32 - 1:29:44 Big crash at the end 1:31:30 - 1:32:35
  15. Nope, it wasn't worth watching unless you're a huge fan of the franchise. I thought the movie was really bad, but I should mentioned that I'm not a huge fan of these graphic novels-turned-cartoon-movies. One of my workout partners is big into them, though. Same guy who lent me Batman: Under the Red Hood passed me this one. He loves the stuff.
  16. Superman: Unbound (DTS-MA 5.1 Track) Level - 1 Star (104.42) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (23.5dB) Execution - 3 Stars - A lot left on the table. The low level hurts this mix. Pretty generic use of effects, but great extension. Overall - 3 Stars. Could have been a lot better with higher levels, but that wouldn't salvage the movie. Recommendation - Rent, but only if you're a huge fan of the Superman franchise.
  17. James, that graph uses a 9dB offset to spruce up the visual representation. Thus, it's 9dB hot if you're going by color scale. In that case, you're 14dB hot. As for graphing movie content, I strongly suggest you use the no sound card method. It's how I'm doing it. If, however, what you're wanting to do is compare your system's frequency response to the content on the disc, I guess you'll need the sound card.
  18. Sure, no problem. Here it is. This is from a demo disc clip (for brevity), prolly Scubasteve's. It's the 0:45-1:16 timestamp from that clip. DTS-MA, fully digital scenecap. Not much down low, aside from the stuff @ DC. But, damn, even though it's not low, that one effect is nearly clipped, and Christ...it's right in the wheelhouse of every capable system. It's LOUD and tactile for just about everybody. Too bad it's so narrow.
  19. Glad to do it. To all: If you would like to see scenecaps on any movie, give me the name of the movie and fairly exact timestamps and I'll post them here. Yes, I'm accepting requests.
  20. Nothing in Triangle is really, really hot, but there are a some good scenes with effects used to set the mood. Lots of wind or water background effects around 10-13hz that create a sense of unease. I didn't capture those, because none of them are hotter than -30dB. However, here are some of the scenes that had more prominent effects. Note: all timestamps are approximate. Also, the graphs of Triangle over at AVS are way too hot for the actual content; these should be closer. Beginning of the storm - 15:55-16:29 More storm - 16:57-17:35 The ship arrives - 20:32-21:12 "We can change the pattern." 57:50-58:46 "Stop this thing!" - 01:05:00-01:05:30.jpeg Doppelganger fight - 01:18:25-01:19:40 Car crash - 01:28:40-01:29:11
  21. I don't know where it's already been released. Typically, however, critics and other industry folks get review copies, based on the studio master, 4-6wks before US retail.
  22. I made certain the offset was at 0 before running the PvA. Edit: however, the settings didn't seem to take effect the first time - they often don't with SpecLab. Sure wish it was coded better. Anyway... I reran it. New PvA shows the same thing, just lower amplitude overall. It's not just that one scene. Essentially all the big effects are centered around 20hz. It's an oddball, from a mix standpoint, but it certainly is effective if you have the displacement to handle it.
  23. Olympus Has Fallen (DTS-HD MA 5.1) Level - 4 Stars (112.3dB composite, 0.2dB shy of a 5 star) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.9dB) Execution - 5 Stars There's some clipping present, but it's not annoying like the clipping in Immortals. Overall - 4.75 Stars Recommendation - buy. This one had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. While barely missing the elusive 5 star rating, it's got the content to go the distance. An instant classic for subwoofer system demos, the Washington Monument scene is a sub-wrecker. Don't hurt yourself (or your system) with this one. Here's the PvA: SL scenecaps in the previous two posts above this one. Pretty decent execution - the big stuff had the weight you'd expect - typical action movie fare, but with a lot of very strong content to DC, which is basically unheard of. Plus, that Washington Monument scene is one of the toughest to reproduce in any movie, any genre, ever. It compares very favorably to the TIH - Cop Car Smash / HTTYD - Red Dragon Crash scenes in depth and magnitude, but is significantly longer.
