  1. Jason Bourne not a bad film, but pretty cookie-cutter for the franchise thus far. My favs are the first Bourne, and Bourne Legacy. Sound was good, not great, good use of ULF, but not very high in level, and the low dynamics score is quite evident when watching.

I hope the dynamic range limitations we have been seeing on recent releases (especially Pixar films) will not be a mainstay of BD releases in the future.

    JSS

4 is a low dynamics score?

  2. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (7.1 DTS-HD MA)

    Level - 3 Stars (107.91dB composite)

    Extension - 3 Stars (17Hz)

    Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.9dB)

    Execution - TBD

    Overall - TBD

    Recommendation - TBD

Notes: Comparing to the second one (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), this looks like it gained considerable extension at the expense of a little level and dynamics. I haven't watched it yet (not a fan of these Hobbit movies at all), but when looking at the Speclab PvA, it sure looks to have some content from 10-20Hz, just severely rolled off.

    I'll take it!!

I watched about an hour of it this evening and thought right away it extended deeper than the first 2.

  3. The average of the content of the entire length is still subject to peaks. With The Equalizer, the amount of content @ 29hz is causing a peak in the average graph. Since the extension score is derived from an -10dB point, these peaks should be somewhat smoothed.

If I was to judge the extension of The Equalizer based on the unsmoothed average response (with mental smoothing), I would place the extension @ 17hz. The frequency span of the peaks in the 50-70hz range, and the overall level of the content in that frequncy range still keeps the extension rating fairly low, so it's certainly not an ULF monster. But an extension to 17hz is probably more subjectively accurate.

Fury is another example. It's quite clear to see that the average level is -45dB, and the -10dB point is more like 19hz. The peak @ 39hz is exactly that, a peak above the average. Deriving the -10dB from this peak is not subjectively accurate.

There's a reason why all things audio are measured as +/- some value. Not - some value from an peak.

Anyway, I'm just being an grumpy old bastard. Thanks for the work you guys do.

Oh - I like the idea of the -10 from average!

  4. Yep, if the spike at 54Hz was 5dB lower, this would have been rated at 10.5Hz.

But, I think it's kinda moot because there were maybe two effects at that frequency, and both were part of the

    big shipyard petrol tanker explosion.

It's not like the rest of the movie was full of content in the bottom couple octaves.

    Cool, thanks.

You know what is kind of funny? You used the spoiler function but when it showed in my email the while txt showed :)

Not that i care, I'll forget it by the time I watch it.

  5. Yes, it's graphed. I'll post it on release day, but it's very similar in response to Riddick, with more level from 60-120Hz, and slightly shallower rolloff below 16Hz, plus the spike at 1.5Hz. As Scott said, it has plenty of midbass punch, which contributes a lot.

It still sounds very good and dynamic. It's just missing that really deep weight that we logically expect big, heavy things and loud explosions to have. The action depicted on screen has that weight in real life.

If this had the gunshots of Open Range, the mechanical bass effects of B:LA, and the environmental bass effects from WOTW, combined with the mixing artistry of Marc & company, we'd have a true legendary mix. Of course, I guess you could say the same about nearly all movies.

Long story short, it's not a disappointment to anyone but the bottom dwellers around here. B) Ported systems will get a real workout, whereas sealed systems will be loafing along, but I think most will still like the movie and the mix.

    Thanks, that is disappointing!

I really hope filmmixer pops in and let's us know what happened.
