GOE was graphed here:
They are saying a brick wall at 10hz. Wonder what the difference is?
-
Fatshaft at AVS graphed it about a week ago in the ULF thread. Looked pretty good to me.
-
Where is the graph?
-
Do you have Jaws on VHS?
-
I thought that I did that already lol. I guess he didn't believe me that others felt the same way.
Is there an ignore option like on other message boards? I don't even check this thread any longer - although I am glad he posted graphs from 1978's Coma LOL
I agree there should be a separate thread for these old movies.

Wow!
I bought this but didn't open it because someone said there was no bass at all in it. Looks like I will be keeping it after all.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (7.1 DTS-HD MA)
Level - 3 Stars (107.91dB composite)
Extension - 3 Stars (17Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.9dB)
Execution - TBD
Overall - TBD
Recommendation - TBD
Notes: Comparing to the second one (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), this looks like it gained considerable extension at the expense of a little level and dynamics. I haven't watched it yet (not a fan of these Hobbit movies at all), but when looking at the Speclab PvA, it sure looks to have some content from 10-20Hz, just severely rolled off.
PvA:
I'll take it!!
I watched about an hour of it this evening and thought right away it extended deeper than the first 2.

Anyone know anything about the bass in Exodus?
I bought this but haven't opened it yet. Heard the bass was terrible. May return it after seeing the graphs.

Anyone know anything about the bass in Exodus?
-
I got mine from best buy.

Has fight club ever been graphed?
-
I am going to have to watch this in German tonight!
-
Wow, why would they filter the English version?
I wonder if he DVD is filtered?
-
Good catch! Thanks. I've updated it on both this and the polled thread.
Is that one of the worst ever?
-
Can you add The Book of Life? Not sure about the bass, but I was getting some 60 Hz kick and don't know how far down it goes.
I would be interested in seeing this one graphed. Felt like 25hz and up, didn't shake my couch or rattle my drop ceiling tiles like movies with ULF do.

The average of the content of the entire length is still subject to peaks. With The Equalizer, the amount of content @ 29hz is causing a peak in the average graph. Since the extension score is derived from an -10dB point, these peaks should be somewhat smoothed.
If I was to judge the extension of The Equalizer based on the unsmoothed average response (with mental smoothing), I would place the extension @ 17hz. The frequency span of the peaks in the 50-70hz range, and the overall level of the content in that frequncy range still keeps the extension rating fairly low, so it's certainly not an ULF monster. But an extension to 17hz is probably more subjectively accurate.
Fury is another example. It's quite clear to see that the average level is -45dB, and the -10dB point is more like 19hz. The peak @ 39hz is exactly that, a peak above the average. Deriving the -10dB from this peak is not subjectively accurate.
There's a reason why all things audio are measured as +/- some value. Not - some value from an peak.
Anyway, I'm just being an grumpy old bastard. Thanks for the work you guys do.
Oh - I like the idea of the -10 from average!
-
Personally, I think there should be some smoothing to the average graph to stop narrow peaks scewing the results.
Interesting idea, but I think that is kind of what the average graph does no?
-
Yep, if the spike at 54Hz was 5dB lower, this would have been rated at 10.5Hz.
But, I think it's kinda moot because there were maybe two effects at that frequency, and both were part of the
big shipyard petrol tanker explosion.
It's not like the rest of the movie was full of content in the bottom couple octaves.
Cool, thanks.
You know what is kind of funny? You used the spoiler function but when it showed in my email the while txt showed
Not that i care, I'll forget it by the time I watch it.
-
Look at the 54Hz spike (green) and the 29Hz spike (red). It's the -10dB point on either red or green traces, whichever results in the better rating.
I have the BR, and I'll measure the 5.1 DTS-HD MA mix in the near future.
Thanks, so if this didn't have that crazy spike at 54hz it would have been rated down into the teens?
-
Thanks for the equalizer graph.
I see a spike at 11hz that looks like it is louder than anything up until 27hz, why does this get a 23hz rating?
-
Thanks for the recent graphs!
I knew Lucy went pretty deep.
There are certain rattles in my room I only hear when the bass is under 10hz

I wanted to check and see if any of these movies are in the queue to be graphed/votes on:
Equalizer
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Lucy
Box Trolls
Planes: Fire and Rescue
I already bought all of these but would still be interested to see how low they go.
-
Has anyone graphed Lucy yet?
Just watched it this evening and am thinking it is not filtered. Certain things in my room seem to shake at very low frequencies and it happened quite a bit in this movie.
-
Yes, it's graphed. I'll post it on release day, but it's very similar in response to Riddick, with more level from 60-120Hz, and slightly shallower rolloff below 16Hz, plus the spike at 1.5Hz. As Scott said, it has plenty of midbass punch, which contributes a lot.
It still sounds very good and dynamic. It's just missing that really deep weight that we logically expect big, heavy things and loud explosions to have. The action depicted on screen has that weight in real life.
If this had the gunshots of Open Range, the mechanical bass effects of B:LA, and the environmental bass effects from WOTW, combined with the mixing artistry of Marc & company, we'd have a true legendary mix. Of course, I guess you could say the same about nearly all movies.
Long story short, it's not a disappointment to anyone but the bottom dwellers around here. Ported systems will get a real workout, whereas sealed systems will be loafing along, but I think most will still like the movie and the mix.
Thanks, that is disappointing!
I really hope filmmixer pops in and let's us know what happened.

4 is a low dynamics score?
