  1. Jason Bourne not a bad film, but pretty cookie-cutter for the franchise thus far.  My favs are the first Bourne, and Bourne Legacy.   Sound was good, not great, good use of ULF, but not very high in level, and the low dynamics score is quite evident when watching.

I hope the dynamic range limitations we have been seeing on recent releases (especially Pixar films) will not be a mainstay of BD releases in the future.

    JSS

Watched this the other night. I agree, not bad, but not great. Couple physics fails that just didn't need to be there. Nowhere near my favorite of the franchise.

Audio-wise? Even with the new LCRs, I turned this one up a lot louder than typical, after a peek at the SpecLab plot, I understand why. Bass was there when called on, certainly not overpowering.

Nothing all that objectionable, but not a fantastic soundtrack either.

Regarding dynamic range? I can't understand why they see the need for such limits, there's no limitation inherent in the format or the media. Sorta sad.

  2. The whole system was in a closet at the back of the room. I got there quickly, but wasn't able to save the sub and amp. Not that great a loss, but still. I still worry about my Media PCs flaking out on me,  but I still rely on them. I just don't use them to do the DSP stuff too. Heck, any more, my AVR can handle nearly all I need. I kicked around UltimateEQ for a while, decided against that for now. Have had no luck at all with JRiver. For now, DSP is in the iNuke, or in the MiniDSP. Have some FreeDSP kits to play with one of these days too.

I hear you wrt the code internally. Less code means less to go wrong. The typical DSP runs a dedicated code set that is hopefully designed to fail gracefully. A typical HTPC? Who knows? I've run lots of different flavors, some have been robust, some are absolute disasters. I think it was MediaPortal on Windows XP that baked the sub, but that was a long time ago. For frontends now, I'm typically running some flavor of Kodi on Linux, but I am still churning through things to find the right combination of what I am after.

  3. It is more fun.

I like to throw in that while sealed gets it done, it's just so inefficient in the process (producing <Fs content). I mean, c'mon... to even sorta achieve what I want to achieve I have FOURTEEN 18's in a small room and it's still.... not enough.

My pair of 12s and I will just sit over here at the kids table...

  4. ...That kind of capability scares me, like what happens if I have an equipment malfunction?  My DSP runs on a computer and is essentially running at 100% volume all the time.  What if I encounter a software bug, or a neutrino flips the wrong bit in memory and causes it to output white noise to all channels?

    ....

That is one of my nightmare scenarios. That and overall reliability are what keeps me from using a pc.

    ...

    This. Times eleventy bazillion.

I had an early home theater PC go nuts on me. Was not a pleasant noise. The sub made some awful noises, then some smoke. Killed the driver and the plate amp. My main speakers survived, but that was before I had any sort of real power on tap.

I'll run hardware DSP, not going to take that chance with software.

  5. "my new, experimental, patent pending, rotary, quadratic, bi-phase, 10th order, sub-harmonic re-accumulator cabinet"

    LOL!

Fair bit of information overload there plus the fact that my schedule is just slammed right now. Throw a work PC that is all sorts of cranky into the mix and I am way behind where I am supposed to be.

I have so many ideas I want to try when it comes to subs, but they're all still on hold. I HAVE to build some temporary furniture pieces, then there's still the fact that I have no railings on my stairways (any of them...). We're hosting a Christmas party in 3 weeks, and those two are just the start of the list of things I need to finish up. Good times.

  6. This is the first I've heard of FreeDSP, so I'll have to spend some time going through the web site.  I can export biquad coefficients in the same format that REW does for miniDSP.  These have the miniDSP oddity that the a1 and a2 coefficients in the file are actually the negatives of the coefficients in the transfer function.  I haven't used SigmaStudio, so i don't know if it expects the inverted a1 and a2 the way the miniDSP software does.

The FreeDSP seemed like it was worth a try. I haven't put mine together yet (just like everything else that's theater-related), but have been playing with the software as I have some free time. I also have a MiniDSP that I can compare with. Was thinking I would just feed the same biquads into each and measure the outputs. Don't hold your breath waiting though.

  7. You're welcome!

A while back, you were talking about raising the max allowable center freq of PEQ filters for horn sub EQ.  I can look at how to do that while discouraging the high max center frequency usage for more typical applications.  Maybe have a special PEQ type that allows it.

I can also apply some pre-EQ to kill the out of band stuff without too much trouble. I am still working on figuring out how to smooth the response as much as possible through cabinet design, anything I can do to minimize the amount of EQ that I need to apply is a good thing.

Have you had any experience applying the MSO solutions to a FreeDSP? I've just started messing with SigmaStudio, but haven't found a way to directly enter biquads yet.

Looks like I found it! Nevermind! There is a 2nd order IIR Coefficient filter buried in the menus of the General 2nd order filter.

  8. Hi,

I've had some strange problems when trying to do a loopback measurement of the frequency response of my UMC-200 pre-pro at line level with ASIO4ALL on a Windows 7 machine with AMD processor using HDMI.  I was able to get a good sweep again (but only temporarily) by changing the REW output channel to a different one, then changing back to the desired channel again.  I don't know if this is the same problem you were having, and I don't know what the sweep would have sounded like, since it was a line-level measurement without a mic.  All I know is that it gave me a really crazy looking frequency response when it happened, which for a line-level device is clearly wrong.

I'm the MSO author, so feel free to ask about it here or in the main MSO thread at AVS.

Hi Andy, thanks for stopping by.

Huge thanks for your efforts with MSO. I have a bit more theater to build before I can put it to work, but I am a lot closer than I was.

  9. Guess I'll need to order the WT2 to go with or replace DATS V2.  They really need to update the website as I looked at Woofer Tester but passed on it due to the old website and wondering if it was still supported.  Good to know it is good, wish I would have known 6 months ago. :)

If your DATS works, by all means, use it.

Mine has become a random number generator, and nothing I've tried to date has fixed it.

  10. Oh, I tried them. I did my homework. I have exchanged emails with Mulcahy and the PE tech guys. I really wanted mine to work, because when it does, it is quick and easy. I do know a fair bit about setting up measurement gear and working with Windows audio. I've used lots of different gear. DATS doesn't measure up.

There is a reason that TrueAudio/Dayton revised the DATS hardware as well as the software (V2 isn't the same as V1). They didn't do it for grins, there are real stability problems with V1. Mine has become a freaking random number generator. I talked to PE about it, all they want to do is sell me another DATS at MSRP. Thanks guys, I'll pass on that. I'd roll those dice at $40, not $100. I already bought the software upgrade...didn't help.

  11. Bwahaha! Exactly.

What the hell Luke? I think this might explain some things. Spend $150 and get a Smith & Larson WT2 if you want an easy button. I would pay the extra for this over the DATS or WT3. I've had all 3. Or save some money and wire up a voltage divider network like figure 2 in the attached pic and use REW or go ahead and get the ARTA suite for LIMP for next to nothing. Either way you shouldn't be manually plotting impedance 1Hz at a time in 2016.

    attachicon.gifLIMP Voltage Divider.jpg

    Um, what he said. Really.

Man, with the rest of the gear you have, skip the DATS, spend a little more and get something that works.

    http://www.woofertester.com/

$160. Plug and play, solid performance, and accurate.

I have all kinds of ways to measure impedance. DATS, WT2, LIMP, SoundEasy, and REW, to start. The DATS collects dust, and pretty much has since I purchased it. I had the O.G. Peak Instrument Woofer Tester way back when and used that for YEARS. Only reason I got the WT2 was the desire to have something that worked in Windows. LIMP came along because ARTA does things the WT2 can't, and I needed to go there. SoundEasy? A friend strongly recommended it, I'm still learning what I can do with it. For checking cabinets though? The WT2 is the first thing that gets connected after my ohmmeter.

If I didn't have the WT2, I'd use ARTA, SoundEasy, or REW with a simple homemade test jig. DATS just doesn't work for me anymore.

DATS sorta worked with W7, but it was squirrley. Now that I'm on W10, I can't get the DATS to calibrate properly or even measure the same driver (or resistor) repeatably. I'm not impressed with it at all.

My settings are correct. I've tried updating to the latest software (for even more $$$), still no joy. At this point, I'm done wasting time and money on it.

The DATS was an impulse buy from PE several Black Fridays ago, and I have pretty much regretted it since. Basically, mine is a useless piece of junk.

  12. Updated my list a bit...

    AJ72,

Just noticed the speaker setup you have. No shortage of dynamic headroom there. KG5.5's for surrounds?! Go big or go home!

LilMike I noticed your sub amp was listed as an Inuke3000dsp... :D

Yeah, currently my whole system is in transition, I don't even have an AVR at the moment cause I just sent mine off for warranty repairs.

It all got moved last weekend, but it is not all in the same building yet. I have a LOT going on with trying to get the new place finished up.

Lots of changes coming, lots of changes.
