Looks like I've got to pick this one up if nothing else but for the fun factor. Anyone want to take bets on how many of my neighbors will complain to my HOA when I listen to this movie at a decent level? Haha.

Well that's surprising. Kind of a bummer about the ULF but it's a great movie and a blast to use for demo's.
*edit* You can see the filter by my screen caps. Lots of info around 25 Hz on up with some remnants at/around 10 Hz in some scenes. The thing I like most about this movie is its awesome demo qualities. I think it's a great sci-fi story with awesome graphics, totally neat ideas, massive creatures, neat environments, etc. I suppose what I'm getting at is that I throroughly enjoy "Valerian" even though the movie didn't measure the best in ULF/LFE. By massive contrast the movie "Weaponized" measured very well in ULF/LFE but, to me, the audio sucked. There, I said it. Weaponized sucked. If anyone wants the Blu-Ray shoot me an email. All I ask is that you over the cost of shipping.

Soooo.....you guys (everyone on this forum) needs to purchase Valerian right now. Here are a few screen caps from the first night I tried to watch the movie. I know what you're thinking "now Nick, you said that you 'tried to watch the movie...why did you only try'"? I spent too much time taking screen caps to finish the movie in under 2.5 hours so I had to watch the rest of it the next day.
The movie is awesome IMO. I only have a 4.1 system but the use of the rear/surround channels is immense in this movie. It's really really cool the way they heavily used the surround channels. I can only imagine what this movie must sound like in an Atmos setup.
Visually the colors and scenes are through the roof. Sound is nuts - PLENTY of low-end throughout the entire movie. But I digress so here are some screen caps from the other night:

I had a feeling the driver was more linear than the 10 mm spec that someone on another forum eluded to. IIRC SVS mentions 20 mm Xmax (one-way) but it's nice to see the graphs. Pretty linear BL on the driver too. Big pat on the back for the shape of the curve. Thanks for showing us the curves. All of them are nice and symmetrical (which is actually more important than shooting for a high number irregardless of the shape of the curve).

Sorry, I am little late to the party. Could you please point me to the newer thread, I could not find it.
I did not mean that high moving mass would always be an indicative of high inductance, I was just replying to his question.
T/S parameters below.
Electrical Parameters
Re 4.65 Ohm electrical voice coil resistance at DC
Le 3.143 mH frequency independent part of voice coil inductance
L2 8.938 mH para-inductance of voice coil
R2 16.81 Ohm electrical resistance due to eddy current losses
Cmes 898.19 µF electrical capacitance representing moving mass
Lces 21.56 mH electrical inductance representing driver compliance
Res 51.10 Ohm resistance due to mechanical losses
fs 36.2 Hz driver resonance frequency

Lm 84.90 dB characteristic sound pressure level (SPL at 1m for 1W @ Re)
Lnom 86.00 dB nominal sensitivity (SPL at 1m for 1W @ Zn)
Series resistor 0.00 Ohm resistance of series resistor
Sd 834.69 cm² diaphragm areaThanks for posting the complete T/S's (unlike what was available a year ago when I posted and you quoted me). Super stiff driver. But since you mentioned using a lazer for measurements, what is the actual Xmax (70% BL, 82% BL, etc), Xmech, Xsus? One-way figures of course. It's good to see someone with Klippel openly publishing the information on this driver. Thanks again.

I hear you. What kind of tests/measurements you are after?
It is not edgewound coil. It has round wire.
16"
Very true. Actually you won't even need two.
High moving mass, lots of inductance.
SVS has their own proprietary basket (+cone and surround) which indeed is 16". Tymphany's own version is 15".
I also had PB12-Ultra and PB12-Plus/2. Great subs.
That is correct.
Quoting from a full year ago? Please see my comments about this driver in the newer thread. It is a nice driver, just not for those on these forums that are happy to plop subwoofers in 20+ ft^3 tuned low. Apparently small sealed does not go over well (we know this because our 11's and 12's are our lowest selling offerings on the forums). But as to your question about my question of T/S's...a proper T/S parameter spec sheet would be good here at Data-Bass. At the time of my post (a full year ago) SVS didn't post enough T/S parameters to model their driver. They really didn't need to do so as they offer a turn-key product but here on Data-Bass a list of T/S parameters is usually a good starting point.
You can add mass without adding inductance. High moving mass is not always indicative of high inductance. See our HST-11 mkII and HST-12 mkII. High moving mass and very good Le:Re ratio behavior.

Is no one going to talk about the audio in Transformers "The Last Knight" whenever Megatron is on camera? The audio has been lightly brushed on here at Data-Bass but I don't recall anyone going into detail. I SpecLab'd a few scenes last night and when Megatron lands in the salt flats the hottest spot is centered at 20 Hz. Sure it's no 7 Hz WOTW, but the sound in the movie makes it worth watching and also using for demo's. I haven't seen much talk about it so I'll go out on a limb and say that I love the proper audio in this movie.

Thanks MrEdge! Is Kong a good movie? Or just a bass-fest?
JSS
I'm with Ricci on this one. Was it an Oscar winning flick? No. But the bass definitely helped the film.

Wow, that looks like it might be super. Hopefully it comes out pretty soon so we can shove it on our systems and see how the LFE turns out.

Kubo and the Two Strings: DTS-HDMA 5.1
Level - 4 Stars (110.6dB Composite)
Extension - 4 Stars (11Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.1dB)
Execution - TBD
Overall - TBD
Notes - Does clip, mainly in the center channel. Decent film, interesting animation. 20Hz is used with many large effects for shudder, just like the PvA shows.
JSS
Thanks for measuring it Max.
Obviously time can change anything but as of right now this movie sits at the top of my demo disks. It is a kids movie so you can show it to anyone at any time and it digs DEEP and is dynamic. Major thumbs up IMO.

The ending credits song is "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Regina Spektor. Here are screen caps from the song:
-
I kept the movie for one more day to capture louder screen caps. Note by the bar to the far right these are at moderate volume. I'm still sending my wife out of the house as soon as the movie shows up at my door.
Louder screen caps:
Sword Unbreakable:
Breakthrough wall and floor:
Kubo finds armor:

So here were last night's very low level captures. You can see by the right hand side how low the volume was...but I ordered the Blu-Ray last night and as soon as it comes in I'm going to send the wife out for a few hours so I can crank it up.
Paper ship sails:
Kubo finds armor:
Fathers fortress:
Kubo helmet:

I recommend "Kubo and the Two Strings". The bass in this is the real deal. Trust me.
Edit: It's a pretty good movie too.
Yes! I've got a few screen caps at low volume for now...but the movie's LFE is so good that I already purchased the Blu-Ray and I'll crank it up and post higher volume level screen caps after the movie gets here.
PS: I'm going to Shazam that song at the very end. It is no joke!

Source: The Ultimate List of Bass in Movies (posted by MrGrey)
Being truthful I didn't make it all the way through the movie without laughing histerically at how cheesy the movie was. I had to stop the movie before it was finished. Good bass in some spots though.

Very cool. Thanks for the info guys. It looks like I'll be picking this movie up real soon to watch and listen to on the HST-11's. I like the steadily increasing low end the deeper it goes.

^ I agree on all accounts. It takes a special case for me to purposely not finish a movie. Hell, I watched "Weaponized" all the way through because of the good / flat frequency response [lack of bass though] and it had horrible acting and a shitty / predictable plot...but I watched it to the end. The second Jack Reacher was so bad that I didn't even last through the first hour.
-
Measured the new Jack Reacher, as Tom Cruise has put out many bass-heavy movies recently.....doesn't measure so well, LFE channel tops out at -7dB, Surrounds at -5dB, LCR use all available headroom, but do not clip....at all.
I'll post up measurements after I watch the film.
Scott, you're right, this IS Data-Bass, but after watching the shark-jumping Frankenstein's Army (and subsequently not digesting my previous meal), Infrasonic extension is not the only important thing in a film soundtrack.
JSS
FWIW I turned the movie off before it was halfway through. I did not like the movie at all.

Tarzan.
Another really good use of surround. Great Atmos mix.
Oh wait. Data Bass. I keep forgetting.
I agree - good use of surrounds and I only have two surround speakers but they had plenty of info being sent through them. I know I've said this about annother movie but I really enjoy movies where the surround speakers have a lot of information in them. And I also liked the quality of the bass in Tarzan. Sure it didn't dig flat into the teens but the emphasis at 30 Hz with info still down to / below 20 was good for the movie. I would have LOVED for it to reach down to 10 Hz flat but at least it didn't fall on its face at 35 Hz.

graph for the legend of tarzan?
No but I grabbed a few SpecLab screen shots of the movie on my Dual Opposed HST-11's:

Doubt he'd be smiling much at ST:B
What's ST:B?

I didn't recognise the sound crew but someone needs to sit them in Bosso's room and make them compare notes with the 2009 reboot...
(Where is Bosso BTW? Don't think I've seen him around for ages now.)
He still lurks here from time to time but I imagine he sits in his movie room letting his Raptor system playback down into the single digits with a big smile on his face.

Suicide Squad: Extended Cut (Dolby ATMOS)
Level - 4 Stars (110.6dB Composite)
Extension - 2 Stars (22Hz)
Dynamics - 4 Stars (26.31dB)
Execution - TBD
Overall - TBD
Comments - No Clipping found, but 30Hz rolloff in place, like a lot of the recent crop of superhero films. Have yet to see the film, but appears to be a relatively clean presentation with some likely compression applied to limit the dynamics.

Bummer about this one. I was hoping for very solid low end because I thought the movie was pretty cool. I thought it looked dumb in the previews but I actually enjoyed the movie when I watched it.

Pretty cool. At least it doesn't cut off at 50 Hz or anything silly like that. Looks like it should be good.
