One of those wild ideas during COVID19 when we were all locked up inside.

In all seriousness, I ended up buying an off-the-rack TV cabinet. The TC Sounds LMS-R 15" each sit in a sealed 2cu foot cabinet.

Dual opposed bigger vented subwoofers, a dream project for another decade, I think...

How does it measure?

Doesn't sound like 16Hz... sounds like distortion

I ended up building a different dual opposed this year and can verify that the there is no need for thick baffles; as the vibration is VASTLY reduced this way.

2) use REW Auto EQ to flat like in this example.

Add first and then subtract later. Or subtract first then add later. It’s all the same in terms of maths.

for a commercial product that you were trying to sell you probably do want to show that it has good bass response and works well in many rooms so you’ll probably need to boost 1st to target your Anechoic response (-3dB/-6dB/-10dB) etc. and allow user to EQ for good in-room smooth bass response. 
 

For your own use no need to worry about that. Just plonk it in for desired room; take measurements at the listening position and EQ it to your taste.

if you are using it in theatre with multiple listeners, use of multiple sub place throughout the room may help smooth out the bass response.

 Here's my design- each LMS-R 15" gets 7.5 cu feet dual 4" ports (150cm2 area) , each about 18" long for Fb of 20Hz.

F3 is about 18Hz and F10 15Hz.

I should probably make the baffles double or triple thickness.

I have a pair of TC Sounds LMS-R 15" which I purchased new back in 2013 but unfortunately never got around to incorporating into a system.

My needs have changed- I recently moved house and need a TV cabinet- and I thought I might be able to kill 2 birds with one stone-

a dual opposed subwoofer that serves as a TV cabinet.

These fancy fandangled flat screens are getting quite big. Mine is "only" 55".

I'm thinking 12cu ft tuned at 21Hz for an F3 of 19Hz gives a maximally flat response, using circular or rectangular ports.

Are they NLA?

Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster.  After many years perusing this website I was pleasantly surprised to see the V2 update.

In it all the systems are placed into tables which can all be organised by Max SPL, sensitivity and cabinet volume etc.

When I arrange all the systems in terms of cubic feet, to me there’s seems a sweet spot, or a few standouts.

Looking around 2 ft.³, the

”MTX15” in small box” is in the lead, with 101.8 dB @ 20Hz

If we scale this up to 16 drivers, we are looking at 34cu ft, and able to hit 125.8 dB.

This is Gjallarhorn and M.A.U.L. territories, give or take a few dB (the advantage goes to the 16 small sealed subs)

Of course 16 subwoofers is going to cost more than 1 large one in a big cabinet, but it’s got other advantages going for it.

Ease of transport, ease of placement,  ease of resale. Perhaps also vertical scalability eg. How many MTX 15” can I buy for one RF TS3 19”?

There’s no free lunch- you need more amps. But what’s the 10+ or 100+ buy price of classD OEM amplifiers modules (400W into 4 ohms). My guess would be under $100 ea.

So is the ideal subwoofer a single large one eg. 18-24” in a very large cabinet eg. 18-36cu ft.

Or multiple smaller ones? Some recent data suggests that multiple small ones help smooth out room modes. These days, some manufacturers are marketing 8” drivers as subwoofers, so surely a 15” driver in a 2.1cu ft cabinet is small enough?! We are bass nuts, it’s probably considered too large for 99% of the general population (or spouses)

But in terms of scalability, it certainly takes the risk/anxiety of the out of the equation of

“Is it low/loud/clean enough?”

Well, just build a couple now, and build more later until you’ve quenched your bass desires.

I have owned quad 10” Peerless XLS woofers, and own two TC Sounds LMS-R 15”, but never experience horn loaded subs.

What other factors am I missing? Or should I just go back to letting us dream about our unobtainium 32” subwoofer screwed into the wall of an adjacent bedroom?
