  1. You know I am really surprised that Triangle is only a 4 star for level. I was sure it would easily be 5 on level. I may need to do a back to back with something that is confirmed 5 star again but I watched it the day after Looper and it seemed way more powerful than Looper. Hmmm...May need to investigate some perhaps some of my settings got messed with...
  2. Thanks for the link Nube. I hadn't seen that...Looks like the 30Hz bass fest I had thought it would be, but I still want to see Max's measurements of it specifically the average level and peak level graphs.
  3. May be some clipping...thought I heard something in the center a few times but it is hard to say for sure.
  4. Ughh... A while back I believe Scott mentioned a movie called Triangle over at AVS and said it had good bass and was a good movie...I have started to trust certain peoples reports about what movies are worthwhile...Scott is one. Anyway I looked it up and saw that it was a thriller/horrer movie. I am a big scary movie fan and I feel like that genre in particular has the "potential" for the type of sound I like to hear, but it is often hard to find ones that are actually a decent movie and that also have good sound. What I mean about scary movies is that they can be very dynamic...Creepy, quiet parts to build suspense and very abrupt and loud transients that correspond with events meant to scare the crap out of people. Action movies often get me irrittated with like an hour straight of yelling, generic bomb explosions and repeated gun fire at full volume...I like dynamic contrasts and variations in the effects used. Anyway back to Triangle...So I buy this movie off Amazon based on a couple of guys recommending it in the bass threads and watched it Saturday night. Let me start with this...I thought the movie itself was fantastic. Very dark and twisty with revelations coming all of the way till the end. I really enjoyed the plot. YMMV but I really enjoyed it. That said, the bass in this movie is absolutely redonkulous. It sort of reminds me of Hot Fuzz where it is just plain gratuitous all the time. We are talking about bass louder than most other movies big events just for the ominous "background" rumbles. And the big events in Triangle are even louder than that. There were 4 parts in particular that stood out to me as bass demo worthy, one involving a storm at sea, one involving a close range ocean liner and the other two later on in the film which I don't remember exactly what was happening on screen, but I plan on rewatching. This is not to mention a bunch of very nice and bass infused gun shots. Now I would not give this movie any awards for bass texture or execution...The bass is brutal and hamfisted a bit IMO. To be honest at times I was literally sitting there with my walls shaking wondering why in hell there is so much bass during a dialog scene... It gets to be almost too much. However when appropriate for big events this movie brings the thunder. Let me put it this way, my woman who watches a lot of movies with me, asked if I had done some tweaking or turned it up louder than normal or something and did not believe me when I told her that everything is set the same as usual. I'd suggest getting this one on the "que"...I am really interested to see the graphs on it and charts for a few specific parts. Mostly it is probably a 25-40Hz bass fest but I felt some other "things" mixed in there as well. So has anyone else here seen Triangle? I'm giving it an easy 5 star for bass-tardism.
  5. Sorry Dave...I've had some issues my self with posting images here and mentioned it to Kyle. I don't know jack about the coding of this forum or coding period so I'm worthless in that regard.
  6. Even if I could reproduce that 1-2 Hz blob without my electronics rolling it off some 12dB, I doubt I would even notice anything in my concrete and brick room at all...might get a whoosh of air noise from many 18's very slowly attempting it. Maybe if you are on a suspended floor you might get a nice tactile shake. I mean we are talking 3 octaves below 10Hz here.
  7. I thought it would be fun for everyone to list their equipment and maybe post a few pics here so others can see what each of us is rocking out on. Here is my 2 main systems that get used. I am not going to bother listing everything else... Ricci HT / Room is roughly 9x14x26 carpeted on cement slab with 3 brick walls, a fireplace, an opening to a hallway and french doors. 8. FYI guys...There really are no mods here. It is just me and Kyle and I know exactly squat about internet or forum development. I am not in a position to help right now anyway. So that leaves...
  9. ALL SOLD!!! More stuff that needs a good home and is just sitting in my garage collecting dust. I am in the Louisville metro area. I will ship but local pickup is welcome and preferred. 4 JBL 2226J 15" pro drivers. All 4 are fully functional and have no VC scratching. All are JBL original and have never been reconed. 3 are in fine cosmetic shape. 1 has got a hole in the dustcap. I did this on accident mounting the driver. These dustcaps are very thin. The driver still functions perfectly. It does not need a recone just the dustcap replaced. This shouldn't be more than $10 and 30min of work. I will put up pics of the damaged dustcap when I get a chance. I would like to get $100 each plus actual shipping costs. ALL SOLD!!!
  10. Watched the TDKR yesterday. Liked the movie but the sound design I thought was just ok. Bane's voice was difficult to understand despite being mixed really loud. Found it annoying. I assume they did that on purpose since he has a mask over his mouth but I really didn't like the effect. Also thought I heard some clipping in parts much like others reported. Bass was loud but had a boomy one recycled rumble sort of feel to me. Also watched Brave. Not a bass monster but I felt the sound design was pretty good and far from anemic. There were some very loud bass sections particularly a couple of sharp upper bass transients that were really concussive. One in particular.
  11. Couple of things i wanted to chip in here... Max thanks for the continued work. I am excited about that test disc. Put me on your list for 1 interested party. It will eliminate a couple of funky steps for me when trying to calibrate things to a standard. Also you are correct about music. None of it will register as even a 1 star using the same criteria as the movie tracks because the levels are so much lower. You would need a separate scoring system for music or 2 channel. I would like to see these three short tracks captured in SL because they are well known by most any bass-head. Telarc Jurassic Lunch, Bass I Love You and the Danley Fireworks Finale track. I can send you these if you don't have them. About the bass bleed over issue. It does happen. Last two times I have went to our local theater to watch a movie I have noticed that there were quiet parts during the film I was viewing where I could clearly hear and even get a bit of seat vibration from the bass in the action movie playing in the next theater over that shared a common wall. These are not great quality theaters (Great Escape)and I suspect they have next to no real output below 30Hz. So the bass bleeding into the next theater is all 30-60Hz for the most part. My point with this is that there is already bleed over from typical 30-80Hz bass in many theaters and this range is going to be far more easily noticed or audible than at ULF. I don't see <20Hz really making the situation any worse than it already would be.
  12. Actually didn't Chuck get 800w out of it at 4ohms per channel and roughly 900 out of it at 2 ohms? I thought it was about 1800-1900W bridged into 4 ohm. I am thinking about trying a Crest CC5500. It is rated at 1800w a channel at 4 ohms and 2750w a channel at 2 ohms. It's a lighter and more efficient than the CA-18 knock offs.
  13. Dave reminded me of a good one I just watched not too long ago. Monster House. Not a whole lot of action until the end sequence but after that it gets pretty good.
  14. I really think we are starting to see a bit of the loudness wars with these action movies where the levels are pushed to the max on certain parts and in an effort to make the soundtrack more powerful on the typical system and get more headroom you filter out the low stuff for that last little bit. These clipping sounds that are starting to creep into soundtracks are to me almost worse than having a 30Hz high pass. A 30Hz high pass does bother me though. I can understand a 15 to 20Hz rumble filter as systems that can reproduce that well are relatively rare but 30Hz takes a lot of potential "fun" out of the bass.
  15. Anything website related is Kyle's call. He did all of the actual programming and work. I just provided feedback and suggestions. I'm sure we can get something done. It may be awhile though as he already has some projects related to uploading measurement data into DB that need worked out to improve ease of use and he just moved or is still in process of moving right now. Kyle, If you get a chance...
  16. JSS, Post #245 does present a quandary doesn't it? I never could decide on a bin size when I used spec lab for just this reason. At the end of the day I think it may be better to have slightly less frequency resolution in order to maintain better tracking of abrupt transients in the material. A few films that may or may not have been mentioned... Flight of the phoenix The grey (primarily for the plane crash scene) Serenity ( this may very well be a 5er) Hurt locker (50 cal desert scene is nasty) The Haunting dts DVD Pulse Hell boy 2 If you wouldn't mind it would be great to do Jurassic Lunch and Bass I Love You and the thx amazing life trailer since basically every GTG runs those. About this differing soundtrack mix thing...it would be interesting to pick a decent bass movie with a lot of different versions available and check them all noting differing dial norm and all. Foreign language, rental, DVD, BR, special edition, extended, directors, etc...M&C might be a good candidate to attempt this down the road. It would be a great experiment. I bet between us we could cobble together 5 or 6 versions easy. I have 2.
  17. Interesting stuff about BR vs DVD levels. I only watch BR anymore so all of my impressions come from that. I watched WOTT once but I wasn't that impressed meanwhile everyone else is raving about it. Max your results seem to fall more in line with what I experienced. Good mix of effects with plenty of depth but could have used more level as it way softer than something like HTTYD or WOTW. It really makes no sense to me why there are different mixes depending on format, region etc. there seems to be plenty of evidence that this is the case though.
  18. ALL SOLD!!!! Creative Sound Solutions SDX-15 XBL^2 drivers (2). 10/10 function, 8/10 cosmetic (scuffs from mounting and on the motor and frame). Funk Audio FW15.2 double 15" sealed enclosure finished in lacewood veneer. ALL SOLD!!!!
  19. You know... I saw everyone raving about CITW's bass and I bought it and watched it twice but other than chapter 17 nothing really stood out to me as all that great. It was well mixed, the content matched the film and the bass went low, it's just not anything I would consider demo worthy. Not enough level to be in the upper echelon of bass movies. The measurements confirm exactly what I was thinking. I do like the movie though. I got some good laughs out of it.
  20. Max save excel graphs as .png graphics files. They always look sharper than .bmp or .jpeg for some reason. You can get some decent looking things out of excel but plan on messing with the format of the graph for awhile until it finally starts to look good.
  21. Agreed...They are kicking ass. The header thing that Dave put together is nice. It would be extra cool if they could somehow get the peak and avg chart into Dave's template.
  22. Again really great stuff guys. Linear scale it is. Thanks for the info on the channel routing. The peak graph should still be used we just need to let people know that it does not necessarily mean one movie is louder overall than another.
  23. How does everyone feel about the charts having a linear frequency axis? I would prefer logarithmic that gives equal weight to each octave. I would still give it to TIH. The average shows TIH having more bass overall. Also below 20Hz there is no comparison. Thor does have some crazy peak events but a lot of them are above 100Hz. I would suspect that the wider bandwidth events are in TIH where they are much more narrow frequency bands in Thor so while the line gets pushed much higher due to a narrow band event the actual total signal strength of these events may not be much different. As an example if you run a single 60Hz sine into a spectrum analyzer and set it for 110dB. You will see the analyzer capture the peak as 110dB. Now run 10 sine tones simultaneously spaced out from 20-120Hz at a combined level of 110dB to represent a wide bandwidth complex signal. What you will see captured on the peak output graph is no frequency is above 100dB and no where near 110dB even though the 10 tone signal is just as strong. A lot of those peaks in Thor look like loud very narrow bandwidth events, which there is nothing wrong with but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are the hottest signals seen as the graph suggests. Hottest energy at that one particular frequency yes not necessarily the most demanding signal on the disc. That huge spike at 140Hz is interesting. I'm assuming that the bass is being redirected from the main channels into the LFE channel for these charts as well? Is there a low pass filter involved if so what type and where? I'm guessing no and that the main channels are sending full bandwidth into the analyzer? That is enough level that it appears that must be present in at least 3 if not 5 main channels. If not and it is the LFE channel which carries that 140Hz and also the 120Hz spike that would be interesting.
  24. Awesome stuff Max. Is there an export function out of SL? Never knew that if so...Looks like you are importing this into Excel or OO? Anyway really cool. Make sure that you do the movie 9 if you get a chance. I don't think it will best some of the super heavyweights but i expect it will earn it's 5 stars. Another good one would be The Hurt Locker. BTW I brought the attachments limit to Kyle's attention last night. He is going to look into it when he gets a chance (He is closing on a new home so you know how that is. Might take a few days.) Sorry about that. We will get it fixed.
