  1. That's a mic capture (using a calibrated UMM6) at the MLP. Now that I changed from the wimpy Inuke 6k to a BossoBass 14k I lost the LT and only have a low shelf filter with the MiniDSP NanoAVR so my response is measurably flat to below 10 Hz (as low as the OmniMic software digs to 5 Hz). I had more fun with the Inuke because of the adaptive EQ where you could boost more at lower volumes and have it progressively go away as you turned it up but this setup is majorly more capable in terms of output...and it sounds better too [saying that might get me in trouble, haha]. I was popping my ears, etc, during the playback of this movie. The subwoofer system is definitely the most capable unit in my movie room compared to the front stage and surrounds but it was still neat to hear/see the blinds and door moving during the heavy LFE scenes. The door moving/buzzing was a first for me, haha.

  3. Oops, forgot to put that part in. They are from the movie Marauders (mentioned earlier in this thread I believe). I picked it up and spent most of last night screen capturing and rewinding it thinking things like "was that 5 Hz hot spot really from a stop light?" I'm going to post more screen captures now...

Tons of bass and LFE surprises throughout the movie. I'm telling ya this movie is #1 on my list. It literally sits at the very top after watching it at a low/ish volume late last night.
  5. I don't have any issues with playback but Max would be the person to ask about clipping. My DO HST-11's take everything in stride.

  7. I completely agree. I SpecLab'd the movie (purchased for my 4 year old son for Christmas but I opened it to watch it and measure it last weekend) and felt the exact same way. I honestly wasn't expecting a power-house but was surprised to see that it reached right down to 20'ish Hz. Filtered pretty hard a little below 20 but decent and "safe" bass dynamics and extension overall.
  8. Thanks Max. I was thinking about buying the movie without renting it first but I am glad that I rented it first. It was so badly filtered I thought something was wrong with my system, haha. I had to put in Gravity to make sure everything was still OK. PS: Spoiler Alert - the new Independance Day movie is just as much of a disappointment. Not the same horrible filter but absolutely zero below 20 Hz. Massive aliens stomping around, huge space ships, etc, and nothing below 20 Hz.
  9. The 8" coil is for power handling.* Edgewound is a nice touch but 8" diameter does not always indicate higher motor strength. I quickly modeled a 4 layer [similar motor strength to a two-layer edgewound] round wire 3.7 Ohm by 25 mm WW 8" ID former cup motor (what the SVS is) using Y35 magnets 50 mm thick with a 40 mm top plate and came up with a BL of 18. Kudos for the edgewound coil but that 8" coil can handle four or five of the amplifiers they are pairing a single unit with. I'm not sure what their play is other than buzz words now that SVS is handled through Best Buy [Magnolia]. Neat driver design though. *If you look at our BHS vs our HS mkII you'll see that the BL^2/Re of the HS mkII motor is actually a little higher than the BHS motor. The HS mkII motor uses a 3" coil where the BHS motor uses a 4" coil. But the power handling of the BHS motor is double that of the HS mkII.
  10. Unless you have a FEM or FEMM modeling program sheer gap height and coil winding width are not accurate if either (or both) measurements are large. Back in the day of smaller drivers with simple overhung drivers with 10 mm of overhang with a 5 mm thick top plate, sure. But today with 30 to 50 mm top plate thickness and 75 mm long coils the simple overhang model falls short of actual 70% or 82% BL. ...basically what Ricci said in his post above. But on a realistic note: No one is going to purchase SVS's 16" woofer system, pluck the driver, and send it into Ricci to be tested. People may say they are going to but no one will. And is no one going to chime in on their verbage for their notes on the response plot [red/orange arrows]? I had a lot respect for SVS until I saw their web page for this subwoofer system and the verbage and specifics (technicalities) they used for this subwoofer system. Or am I just "that guy" that is saying what everyone else is thinking but no one is willing to say it?
  11. If we took a page from SVS's new marketing strategy we could list our HST and HS series drivers at 76 mm Xmax and 130 mm Xmech. I wonder how this forum and other forums would take that adjustment vs. what SVS has done? I could tell you but it would piss people off and start finger pointing towards us and not SVS. Xmax is, has been, and always will be one-way linear excursion unless stated differently. Even then, stated differently is skating around the true meaning and definition of Xmax wether you adhere to 70% or 82% BL.

  13. Haha,what I meant by my demo list is just that...MY demo list of movies in my house. Obviously not showing it to anyone young but rather a good movie to plop in if I have certain people over. Definitely not a movie i would use to demonstrate at any show. Too much violence and language.
  14. While my signal chain is no where near as flat as Bosso's I will confirm that DeadPool is going to be at the top of my list for demo disks.   16. DOOM I got into playing the BETA before the actual game came out and since the full game was released one day ago I have played it every night. The intro screen has a nice deep bass section that is centered right at 35 Hz and above so it has that heavy bass feel to it...especially for a video game. Well last night my parents watched my son overnight so I was able to turn up the volume a little bit and grab some screen shots in SpecLab. The two screen shots are during game play: 13 Hz artifact with full spectrum bass up to the crossover point: Below 10 Hz extension with another nice artifact at 12/13 Hz and again bass throughout the spectrum: PS: If any of you have pesky nighbors or thin insulation in your walls do not crank this up.   17. Ditto! I rented the Blu Ray two days ago and plan on purchasing the movie as soon as I take back my rental. I had zero plans to watch it as I thought it was going to be another Rocky'esque film predictable and cheesy but I actually really liked the story and especially the camera work. No jerky fight scenes all over the place - a lot of the fighting scenes were almost one take which was really nice. The bass extension in a few scenes is really really nice. I felt like the audio in general was extremely well done. I'll turn it up again during the day and take some SpecLab measurements in my room but this movie really kicked butt in the audio area. In one fight scene I got up to press on my room treatments on the back wall because I thought they were bouncing against the wall from the bass but it was actually the sound from the surrounds in the audio mix, haha. A little louder than my Rush screen shots but here is the Creed scene where Creed gets knocked down in the final fight: And the beginning of the credits:
  18. I highly recommend purchasing Rush. Check out the thread again as I just posted a few low level SpecLab screen shots. As previously noted the deep bass info is mostly during racing scenes but the audio is stellar throughout the entire movie. Extremely well done. Record player scene with strong info down to 5 Hz: First Hunt McLaren scene with info below 20 Hz: Monaco scene: After the Lauda press conference: Again these are low-level/low-playback measurements but you get the idea.
  19. Yeah I know all of that. I thought that you had settings in the BEQ thread for certain movies so instead of me making up my own settings in my MiniDSP just for The Fifth Element based on the static measurement I replied to a few replies ago I figured I would see if you had measured the LFE output on that movie and come up with BEQ settings that I could plug in since you said that the static measurement may be incorrect for doing EQ work to the subwoofer system.
  20. Bummer but now we know exactly where to start boosting to make it flat down to / below 10 Hz. Looks like +5 dB @ 30 Hz, +15 dB @ 20 Hz, and +30 dB @ 10 Hz with enough Q to cover the differences. Thanks for posting the analysis.
  21. Ditto. I thought The Fifth Element had awesome bass when I was in college with four Eminence PA-15's IB in four of the 18" drop-celing spaces powered by a Carver 1.5. But that was before I knew what truly deep bass was. It was bass, but not DEEP bass like what we measure on here. Since I got my movie room going I ended up purchasing nearly every version / publication of The Fifth Element trying to find a good proper mix with maybe some more low end extension but no-go.
  22. That's it! Next time I pass Red Box and see a movie on the front and think "that might have good bass" I'm picking it up. I didn't rent Pixels nor Tomorrowland when I had the chance and I passed on Ant Man just a few days ago. Never again. Thanks for posting the screen caps!
