    Interstellar (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 5 Stars (114.1dB composite) Extension - 2 Stars (22Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (26.09dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: We've been waiting for this?!?!? Interstellar is clipped all to hell. Well, technically it's just hard-limited, but as maxmercy says, "if you're hitting the brick wall limiter, maybe you need to revisit your mix technique." Check the graphs - almost everything L/C/R + LFE in loud sequences is chopped off, and it sounds very obviously crunchy and muddy. This is reflected in the poor dynamics score, too - whoever said this is a very dynamic mix needs to get their ears checked. LOUD != DYNAMIC or DEEP. Yeah, the 30Hz effects might rattle your windows and your couch, but they're hollow sounding and not very realistic. This mix booms, when it could fill the room with pressure and power. I'll admit that I really enjoyed the movie, even if the ending was not properly supported through the story's development. However, what most people are complaining about regarding the mixing of the dialog is totally true in my experience - even during quiet sequences, you just couldn't hear the dialog. At all. Overall, Interstellar a huge disappointment in mixing, yet a movie worth watching. Once. Nolan should never "turn it up to 11!!!!!!" in the mixing booth. PvA: Clipping:

Perhaps it's the scenes with creepy, loud bass down low that raises the hairs on my neck. Perhaps it's the fact that I was raised Catholic. Perhaps it's the huge transients that make my heart race. I don't know, but 3:00AM still bothers me if I wake up around then, even though I don't believe in that stuff! There are several scenes with huge content below 20Hz. One reuses that 1Hz & 5Hz effect a few times, and wow is it intense. PvA:

    It's not a super loud movie, so you may need to bump the volume +5 or so, but you won't regret it.

    Exodus: Gods and Kings (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.24dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.36dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Mixed by the same guy who did Star Trek (2009), the sound design is very well articulated, but subtle. There's nothing even approaching clipping in the whole movie, nor is it soft/hard limited. It's a nice, fairly clean mix (unlike the upcoming 30Hz blockbuster that everyone's raving about because it's so loud). The graphs don't lie - this one's got the goods down low, too. What's weird is there is a TON of medium level content below 10Hz that is skillfully used to build the mood. It really imparts power. The same sound designer who worked on Captain Phillips must have brought a lot of that library over, because it's excellent. The movie is ho-hum but the sound is good. PvA:

I haven't watched it yet (not a fan of these Hobbit movies at all), but when looking at the Speclab PvA, it sure looks to have some content from 10-20Hz, just severely rolled off. PvA:

    Beast, Do they measure well in terms of rolloff? I'm also seeing that they're fairly cheap for the output. If there's a documented fan mod, and the rolloff is solid, I may be in the market for one.

What this is - a spectacular movie with solid percussion that's very well mic'd and mixed, including fantastic acting, and all set to some of the best standard jazz you'll hear anywhere. I'm only including it here because we have a bunch of musicians who frequent the site, and ya'll should watch this movie. It's the best movie of any genre I've seen in the last year+. PvA:

Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: I'll be honest - after reading reviews of the bass in various places, I streamed this via Netflix and was not at all impressed. It didn't even wake my girlfriend on a weeknight at my normal listening levels, and I thought the movie was mediocre. However, after all the positive reviews continued to roll in, I grabbed the BR and measured it. I haven't rewatched the disc, but it has fantastic scores. While the mixers left a bunch of really high level DC noise in the mix, that's not the story. The real story here is the TRUCKLOAD of VERY HOT content from 9-25Hz. Almost every scene has something deep in it. I'll wait to cast my vote until I've watched the disc, but this is tentatively vying for the coveted true 5 star rating! PvA:

The shotgun blasts in the beginning are insane, and they account for the big bump below 10Hz. The second half of the movie has very little bass content, but the movie is such a winner that you'll never notice. When you watch this, you'll understand why Randy Thom's mix and sound effects were both nominated for Academy awards. The mix is full, extremely dynamic, clear, clean and diverse. PvA:

    Is a Crest Pro-lite 7.5 a good option? Reviews I found said solid power output, fans that aren't very loud, more reliable than IPR2 7500, and not too expensive. I just don't know about the rolloff.

    I measured both Nightcrawler and Force Majeure after they were mentioned a few weeks/months ago elsewhere. Nightcrawler was a good movie, even though Jake G. is a weirdo - don't like him in much of anything. While neither is a bass movie - both exhibiting very low levels and minimal bass effects - they do have content extension to single digits. I'd post them if anyone wanted, but I doubt anyone cares.

    Yep. If you click the link on the first page to the spreadsheet, goto View at the top, Choose list, then click on the Extension column a couple of times to sort it descending, looks like Dracula Untold is the 3rd worst measured extension ever. Pitiful.
