  1. I've got Captivators with 17Hz port tune. I find Star Trek not to be at all lacking even though I don't experience full bandwidth effects. However when I watched this for the first time something was amiss. Can't recall exactly but I think it was just after I moved house and hadn't EQ'd properly. I didn't get what the fuss was about but redid the EQ and it was night and day. A great bass movie.

Oh.... And welcome to Data Bass.

Just a note that Star Trek has a -4 dialnorm as well.

Yessir.  That's one approach.  Purists might not like it if they want to reproduce the mix exactly as the mixers intended, but it's all about finding what works for you.

I've been slacking a little on the polls because 1) not enough votes to kill the ties on some (VOTE, PLEASE!); 2) lots of family was in town recently so I haven't had much time; and 3) I've been working overtime to be able to go away to Telluride this weekend.

Long story short, things will be back to situation:normal next week, and I'll start retiring old polls and putting up some new ones.  I'll also take some time to analyze the waveforms on a couple of movies in question.  I might even watch them as well, if given enough time!

    Happy Independence Day!

Thank you sir for sharing your time and engergy with us!  And...

  3. Finding Nemo (7.1 TrueHD)

    Level        - 4 Stars (111.04dB composite)

    Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)

    Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.38dB)

    Execution - Will poll

    Overall     - TBD

    Recommendation - Will poll

Notes:  This is an oldie but a goodie.  Really stellar work on the sound design that makes it the perfect complement to the fantastic animation and fun plot.  The mixing is generally good, with the only clipping I heard was in the famous Darla Tapping scene, which was probably intentional.

My only complaint about this movie is that we (myself included) tend to think of it more nostalgically than it deserves.  It was one of those mythical movies with bass for a few years, but look at the graph: it's terribly humped and peaks significantly at 32Hz.  While it's technically a 5 Stars movie for extension, the -10dB point is actually 23Hz if we disregard the 1 very short transient effect that goes from DC to 1.5Hz for a brief moment and isn't even noticed during viewing. Finding Nemo really games the system for that 5 Stars extension rating, but them's the rules.

I like the flick a lot, but would have to deduct at least 1 star, and maybe two, from the execution rating due to the fact that it's actually a 2 Star extension movie (tho not technically), and that it's a very humped graph.  Otherwise, a fantastic movie with very immersive sound, plot and visuals.

  4. I haven't looked at the DVD of The Hobbit.

Well guys, if you ever check the 1st post, a few films have moved up, and a few films have moved down in the rankings now that I am measuring 100% digitally.  I am sad to say that War of the Worlds is now a 4.75 Star film, so is Looper.  I have many films to go, but those two surprised me, even more so that WotW is riddled with clipping in every channel.  I do not own the film (didn't like it), but every high spl scene has clipping in at least one of the channels.  Like every other film, the center channel clips the most.

    Harry Potter 3&4 soon...

    JSS

Thank you for taking the time to re-do the measurements.  I really appreciate your work.

  5. The moron nicked my graphs and posted them at AVS right after he said you and I are doing a lot of work for nothing because no one cares what the graphs say. That's a problem for me. I'm not doing all that work for some shitwipe to lift it and post it elsewhere with the same BS critique that caused my exit from AVS.

I wiped TDKR from my photobucket account to verify that he lifted the graphs and didn't just take the links. I need a solution to this problem. I prefer to just let AVS do it's thing and not be any part of it, especially not through some mental patient without my direct input.

This project just isn't that important to me that I should feel any discomfort over it at anyone's expense. I've had enough of that nonsense over the past 10 years. It just holds no interest for me.

    Greetings Gentlemen,

Let me start by saying thank you for your time and effort in this area. Even though my subwoofer doesn't play as low as many on this thread, I value the insight and specs that you provide.

Bosso, I understand your frustration and anger towards men like JPC and Gary J but without his posting, I would never have found you guys. For even those whose intentions are wrong can be used to do good.

    Thanks again gentlemen
