Hi,
Being reading through your web site, forums and threads on other forums. Very interesting designs and exceptional dedication to measurements,
Thank you for your time and effort!.
I am very interested in this design and in particular the development of single cone version.
I find I often end up loading the van/stacking by my self and have really been enjoying single driver bass bins recently.
I am looking forward to seeing how this works out.
Sol.
Single driver version?
Have you looked into the Othorn design?

Transparent.
Heh. How ironic that a company that touts itself as "transparent", to the point where that is their fucking name, can make a product that is LESS transparent by adding components into the actual signal physically.
Bravo.
This is high end Hi-Fi, fellas.

Don't tell me you are having this problem with your wall-o-bass. Are you?
The obvious solution is to have my listening room with its enormous room gain at 20 Hz and a ways above. I don't need to build horns when my room behaves like one with sealed sub. My problem is that I may break something if I try to push as high as I can go.
It was more of a general statement of circumstance.
Of course, like you, I mostly get room noises when I push it hard.

I like the sound of both. I'd say they sound fairly similar below 60Hz. I'm going from memory on the Othorn cause it's been a while since I heard some. Seems like the Skhorn design sounds a little smoother up top. That shouldn't be surprising since it doesn't have the little peak at 110Hz that the Othorn does. I always EQ'd that down but there is no need on this one. I don't know, all the measurements say the Skhorn should be at least as good, but since I don't have both on hand for direct comparison, it's all guess work. One thing I like about horns and this cab is the output is high relative to driver excursion and the driver is buried in the cab. That was a big part of this cab was that the drivers are completely inside so you can't hear mechanical noises from operation until beating on them hard. Direct radiators just always seem to start developing some non-bass noises right when the output is getting to the level wanted. There's still vent noise to contend with but I haven't figured out how to defeat that one on a cab with this much output yet.
Basically you have huge headroom, relatively low power levels needed, very low distortion at sane playback levels, good decay rates, reasonably smooth response up well past the crossover and all of the output is from horns or ducts so driver operation noise is buried in the cab. It's a recipe for a sub that can sound great and be fun all at the same time IMO.
I'm still waiting for Ti (Dsl1) to let his rip in his living room...Still can't believe he has that in a house.
Bolded part: for real! Just when the getting gets good, they start making funny noises. Time to double or quadruple up on subs again. D'oh!

Heheh... nice post, Josh. Always good stuff, my man.

Are there any noticeable SQ differences between this and the Othorn's.
As has been mentioned many a times and then general consensus is that the Othorn's were "great sounding". Do the Skorn's seem any different SQ-wise or is all about the same when you have this kind of fire power (no nasties til the ragged edge)?
I put quotes cuz I've still never heard them.
-
Hmm. I wonder how they would compare if you used iPal loaded Othorns for that comparison, Josh.
I would think it would nullify any advantage from 50hz and down.
Just a guess! But something I noticed...and it made me curious.
-
Yes. That is part of the reason for having the Crowson. It will extend the frequency response however... you will have to be sitting down to feel anything below 35hz on your system.

Need some bass plots of those parts.
What's happening during those parts, John?
Damnit. Don't post this stuff while I'm at work! I can't go check. Argh!!

John Wick (7.1 TrueHD)
Level - 3 Stars (109.38dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.5dB)
Execution - 4 Stars (by poll)
Overall - 4.25 Stars
Recommendation - Buy (by poll)
Notes: Very solid bass. Nothing demo worthy, but just generally good. Movie was OK. Loved the scenes in the hotel and nightclub.
PvA:
Clearly, Nube has not watched the film.

Do we know what scene has that huge amount of <5Hz content? It would be a very rare system indeed that can do anything with it. Even with a BIG sealed system, transducers or IB the typical electronics roll off chain is going to be way down in level below 5Hz. Probably a good thing too cause look at the peak level on that at 1Hz!
Likely lots of things, as most of the effects during the war sequences have all sorts of ULF accompanying these effects.
However...
I'm pretty sure it is Vince Vaughn's characters M3 grease gun that did it. There is a part at the end where he is firing it and my sub riser fluttered up and down like a mofo.

Looks the same to me but this has more <20hz, sure.
Same major humpage ~30hz like everything else mainstream these days.
The tone of this bass track is *RUMBLE**RUMBLE**

MrGrey posted this on AVS:
Pretty much what I expected. Kinda looks like the first Avengers PvA.
Picture quality is reference though, wow!

That Hacksaw Ridge graph is insane!

See the movie.
Wow!
It is an excellent film through and through. Terrific bass and Atmos sound.

Scott, you're right, this IS Data-Bass, but after watching the shark-jumping Frankenstein's Army (and subsequently not digesting my previous meal), Infrasonic extension is not the only important thing in a film soundtrack.

I agree - good use of surrounds and I only have two surround speakers but they had plenty of info being sent through them. I know I've said this about annother movie but I really enjoy movies where the surround speakers have a lot of information in them. And I also liked the quality of the bass in Tarzan. Sure it didn't dig flat into the teens but the emphasis at 30 Hz with info still down to / below 20 was good for the movie. I would have LOVED for it to reach down to 10 Hz flat but at least it didn't fall on its face at 35 Hz.
I forgot what amp you were using. Can you enter in BEQ settings? Maybe there will be some preset for Tarzan to bring up that ULF.
FWIW I turned the movie off before it was halfway through. I did not like the movie at all.
Right. The 2nd Jack Reacher movie ssssssuuuuuuuuuuucccccccckkkkkkkkkeeeeedddd.

How Tarzan as a movie?
It was okay. I didn't love it and the trailers seemed to show the whole movie. I hate that.
But it was enjoyable. Good performances and production value. Things looked and sounded real good. Not sure how often I'd re-watch it though. Worth a watch if you were interested.

Tarzan.
Another really good use of surround. Great Atmos mix.
Oh wait. Data Bass. I keep forgetting.

SVS typically tailors their subwoofers response to be flat anechoic.
I'm sure they slice out any rising response if the driver has it with internal DSP shaping. Had these been passive systems where Ricci could dump a larger amp worth of CEA burst...it might look different.
They like to publish nice pretty lines that are flat.
-
It is more fun.
I like to throw in that while sealed gets it done, it's just so inefficient in the process (producing <Fs content). I mean, c'mon... to even sorta achieve what I want to achieve I have FOURTEEN 18's in a small room and it's still.... not enough.

Spent the past day trying to come up with alternate drivers with such features. I really...can't think of any. Hate to say it but you might have to look into high-end car audio but then things are expensive again.
The past half-decade has been full of low cost, large-ish displacement (for the money) drivers and they are almost always higher Qes or something else making them otherwise unsuitable for such alignments.
Frustrating.

Wow! Excellent response about this new system, Josh. You answered my questions too. Thanks!
What would you say about one of these compared to (2) Othorn's with 152's and equivalent amplification? Disregarding build differences (just performance) what would you say about that comparison? Do the differences come down to TH versus BP and their aspects or something else? There will be differences, I'm sure but I'm wondering. The consensus of the Othorn is that is one of the best sounding TH's around. I believe it! So I wonder if this has the same qualities to knock the Othorn off the podium.
Thanks.
Oh and can you model me a horn using HT18's? I want it to be tuned to 8hz. Keep it smaller, plz. Done by this weekend? Thanks!
Sorry. Can't help myself.
-
The model looks like it is loaded with IPAL's. Is that the driver of choice or does this work with the B&C 21SW152 like the Othorn?
Do you think this is better than the Othorn in other aspects besides more output over the Othorn?
-
Doesn't go down to 5hz.
*unlike*

Disgusting.
Pfft! What are you talking about?
This soundtrack was tailored for your Othorns. Just turn off the sealed system.
-
Lol. Zero stars for extension.
C'mon. I'm sure that's enough for just ONE star.

Not really. Just one very loud/dynamic event that puts it's mark on the PvA.
