  1. First, welcome Blake. This is a great board, every once in a while there is some drama, but the people are really great. I've met several in person and many more through posts and private messages. This is definitely one of my favorite boards. Realize I recently started a company offering subwoofers so you're welcome to take my comments with a grain of salt but JL Audio isn't really in the ball park of what most people on data-bass use for subwoofers. For many on here, a midbass is 15", a sub is at least 18", and a sub system is multiple subwoofers. And considering the JL Fathom with 1 13" driver and a 2500w RMS (short term, specific spec would be nice) is $4,300, it doesn't fit the value proposition when many people on here build their own sub systems. And the more popular subwoofer brands often discussed on this board would be JTR, Seaton, Funk Audio, PSA, Reaction Audio, as well as my subs and the value and performance just doesn't stack up in JL's favor. I'm also somewhat neglecting the ID companies that make smaller subs such as HSU Research, Rhytmik, and SVS Research since they make smaller subs and data-bass is all about reproducing deep bass. I'm not saying JL produces a poor product, far from it, but the value and performance just doesn't compare with DIY or many of the Internet direct brands. And finally, JL would have to send Josh Ricci a subwoofer to test and ask him to test it. I doubt the JL would stack up well against dual 15", 18", 21", and 24" subs so if I was them, I wouldn't put my sub in the mix. Many of the Internet direct brands, definitely speaking for myself too, want Josh Ricci to test our subs because he has a stellar reputation and it is a good form of marketing. From a marketing perspective, JL Audio is so far beyond all of the Internet direct brands I've mentioned, COMBINED, that JL Audio has no need for Josh Ricci to test their subs. My opinion anyway. Now of course we as consumers would like to see every subwoofer tested by Josh so we have a Data-Bass of subs. My guess is the only way Josh Ricci would test a JL sub is if a user sent him their personal sub to test. But Josh is a busy guy and I'm not sure he'd want to do that when there will be people like me paying him to test my subwoofers later this summer. Of course, Josh doesn't charge enough for the time and effort the testing takes as well as running this great site but that's a different discussion. Do you already have the Fathom F113 or are you looking to purchase one? If you don't own one yet, you've got many people on here with many different subwoofer systems and we can definitely steer you in the right direction if you're open to other subwoofers. Just tell us what you're looking for in terms of bass reproduction (music, movies, a system for movies and sub-10/15/20 Hz bass), the size and shape of your room, any space constraints for subs, as well as a budget. Also let us know if DIY is an option because that opens a whole bunch of options for a tremendous bass system at many price points. David
  2. Depending on the amplification modules used, the rack mount amps can be configured to handle many more channels than even 4. For an 8,000w or 12.000w amp, it would be dual channels using the SpeakerPower designed modules providing 2 x 4,000w (120V at 2 ohm) or 2 x 6000w (240V at 2 ohm). If it used the smaller ICE modules, it could be configured with multiple channels of 350w or 700w modules. Hopefully there will even be a more powerful module than 700w available soon. I definitely look forward to the options.
  3. Looks like you are correct in relation to the rack mount versions. However, the HT version of the plate amps is cheaper than the pro version, which is what I use along with Reaction, JTR, Seaton, PSA, etc. So there is definitely an advantage there. SpeakerPower is primarily a company focused on providing amps to OEMs. OEMs will have access to the internal DSP, which is where the serial port comes into play. A non-OEM user will not get access to the internal DSP.
  4. And guess who I had lunch with on Friday to find out all about the new gear. Definitely excited by the new offerings and even better since he has introduced the HT series, which are less expensive than the Pro series.
  5. I agree. Now to just turn that into a business mission statement. LOL! Fascinating read. Thanks for sharing.
  6. Depends on the level of said low level dynamics. I'd prefer the sound engineer to realize when they leave a 6 Hz fundamental in the mix and it is 10dB hot. <*COUGH*> Lone Survivor <*COUGH*> Maybe if more people owned subwoofers capable of reproducing those levels...yeah...that's how we can solve this problem.
  7. My test enclosures now have external amp and sub connections so I can isolate them quickly with the pull of a banana plug jumper. I am not experienced enough to ignore your warning so I will only use the DMM when taking amp connected readings. Thanks for the save Shredhead. So Luke, did you tell your electrical engineering friend that you planned to hook up an oscope where you were previously showing hooking up a DMM? I'll go back to my original plan of only using the oscilloscope to view the incoming signal to the amp. I also have a DATS that I will use to take sub measurements. It will be interesting to see the T/S parameters for a cold sub, warm sub, and a Lone Survivor sub session
  8. Maybe its just that cheap Rigol you bought. Maybe my cheaper Hantek will work just fine. LOL!
  9. I should have my resistors this week so I'll see what sort of results I get. Thanks for the info on the resistor to use and the diagram. Great stuff and appreciation.
  10. What did you end up ordering for resistors? Hurry up and assemble and test it so I can place my order. I received my 10x probes the other day but didn't pull the trigger on the resistors until my beta tester gives me feedback.
  11. I noticed that today as well. Supposedly mine can be upgraded since they're all basically the same core unit, at least that is my understanding. But I was leaning towards the Rigol as well until Shreds pointed me to the Hantek. Likely can't go wrong with any of them.
  12. $17 on Amazon. Ordered. Thanks.
  13. I just bought this one based on ShredHead's recommendation. http://www.circuitspecialists.com/hantek-100mhz-digital-storage-oscilloscope-dso5102p.html?otaid=gpl&gclid=CNqi2brcrMkCFYI7aQodNTEBmg
  14. Cool app. What LG amp are you running? Are there any other amps (read less expensive ) that show output history? Then again, I guess I could use the history of the oscope I just received for Xmas. Can't wait to start playing with that. Have been wanting an oscope since I was a kid.
  15. I was generically referring to the power supply as a system rather than the individual components involved. But I would think it would be the capacitance and quality of components as much as anything else, which is why the sister Crest ProLite 7.5 is preferred (presumably due to power output) over the same design of the Peavey IPR2-7500. But who knows what sort of protections and filters have been implemented as you surmise.
  16. The other aspect you need to look at is frequency. The power ratings for most amps are given at 1,000Hz if I remember correctly. Based on my informal, real-world experience, the IPR2-7500 has more power down low, below 20Hz, which would lead me to the opposite conclusion than yours, which is the IPR2-7500 has the stronger power supply. But it would be interesting to see if Luke's tests would bear this out so we could have some true data.
  17. Need I remind people we're hanging out on a Data BASS forum. We're all kinds of crazy, which now seems remarkably...sensible. Lol!
  18. I love that line of thinking Josh. Hopefully you'll have the system running within the next few months so I can come up and hear it this spring. Should be breath taking.
  19. Have business. Want 32 channel Trinnov. Any takers?
  20. Personally, I thought it was a work of art and seems to perform like one too. And I had the same thought about mounting it inside out or with plexiglass if I were to use one. A tall column with the sub mounted inverted would look like a stand with a piece of art on top. I'd really like to know who developed it as my first thought was who did Rockford hire.
  21. Coach2369 of AVS was raving about the John Wick disc as a LFE treat. I was thinking it would be a good demo track...until I heard all of the language and saw so much graphic violence. But I personally liked the bass and sound mix very much (And by demo, I mean at shows).
