  1. Bears (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (105.64dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (13Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.16dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Tossup Notes: With its stunningly beautiful cinematography, this one has full-bandwidth content and sound design to match, but it's never overwhelming. Bears wouldn't normally be referred to as a bass movie, but it's a very good family movie, if you can get over the annoying narrator. PvA:
  2. Oculus (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.45dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (32.24dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Most of the effects are very clearly filtered at 20Hz, but then there are a couple that aren't, and there's noise below 1Hz that is not filtered out either. The movie is surprisingly cerebral and not terrible (or terribly creepy), given the genre. It's worth seeing if you're a horror fan, but don't expect a very scary movie. PvA:
  3. Divergent (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (107.11dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (27Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.33dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 2.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: The response drops like a rock after 30Hz. I expected more out of this one's mix in all areas, but it really came up short. PvA:
  4. Need for Speed (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 5 Stars (113.06dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (14.6Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (27.09dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: From the very beginning, most of the big bass is above 40Hz. However, the response doesn't appear to be significantly rolled off until around 20Hz; there are still good effects that dig into the 20-30Hz region. Need for Speed sounds very good in general, while only lacking the really deep effects and the dynamics. It's loud, but it's supposed to be. This sound team has many Oscars and many more nominations, and when you watch the movie, you'll understand why. Too bad the movie is so blah. PvA:
  5. Glad that's sorted for ya, Aj72. I have to give you a heads up that I have Divergent, Oculus, and NFS all measured and ready to post once I get home tmw. Also, a quick tip for those of you with kids that the upcoming release titled Bears has a ton of bass, delicious cinematography, and is a great family watch if you can get over the narrator.
  6. Solomon Kane (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (112.1dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (4Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.94dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Solid content all the way down, but most of the huge stuff is 25Hz and above. PvA:
  7. Man On Fire (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.33dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (25.5Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.13dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) PvA:
  8. The Losers (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.29dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (17Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.78dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) PvA:
  9. Babylon A.D. (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (107.29dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (9.5Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (26.71dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) PvA:
  10. The Watch (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.29dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (17Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.25dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: No really big effects until near the end. PvA:
  11. Constantine (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 3 Stars (108.39dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (12Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.75dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Tossup (by poll) Notes: Tons of stuff down near DC, with hits at 11 and 13Hz, and a few other good effects below 20Hz. Surprisingly decent bass in this movie. PvA:
  12. Here's Underworld Awakening at the scene you spoke of (0:46:42 - 0:46:46 Super Lycan Roar): That one extends to 12Hz with powerful content, but as you can see, the big hit is right at 34Hz. Sounds like your issue is the amp.
  13. Agreed. It's been a slow summer, but I have some measurements of old ones that are impressive. I'll be posting as soon as we get a few more votes to call the outstanding polls.
  14. Noah (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (110.68dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (16Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.58dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Another blockbuster with a rolled off low end. While it's not severely rolled off, the content is centered around 35Hz. There is stuff below that, but it's significantly lower level. And, ya know, a biblical flood movie really should have the super deep bass content. Good visuals, decent audio, so-so movie. PvA:
  15. 30 Days of Night (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 3 Stars (107.98dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (16Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.68dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Besides one scene with a few 16Hz hits, this is a 30Hz film. PvA:
  16. 5 Days of War (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 4 Stars (110.97dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 4 Stars (25.88dB) Execution - 5 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Absolutely truckloads of content below 20Hz, with some of it shockingly high-amplitude. Unfortunately, most of the hottest content is below 2Hz, and likely filtered out by our signal chains. Terrible movie. PvA:
  17. 10,000 B.C. (5.1 TrueHD) Level - 3 Stars (109.8dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (29.77dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: The mammoth hunt (11.35 - 15.45 mark, see graph below) has massive content from 1-35Hz. The rest of the movie is pretty ho-hum for bass, and I thought the flick was mediocre overall. PvA: Mammoth Hunt (11.35-12.30)
  18. Rio 2 (7.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 1 Star (98.98dB composite) Extension - 3 Stars (19Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.16dB) Execution - 1 Star (by poll) Overall - 2.5 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Incredibly low levels, which is odd for a Randy Thom mix. I expected a lot more - not sure why, after the first one - but there's basically nothing here. PvA:
  19. Rio (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 1 Star (102.4dB composite) Extension - 4 Stars (13Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.12dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: One effect at 13Hz gives it the rating. Most other content is 30Hz and above. Surprising lack of bass levels and effects given Randy Thom's work on this mix. PvA:
  20. But but but...where are the Seaton Submersive HP and the JTR Captivator ported and sealed tests?!? You know that's what everyone is clamoring for.
  21. Jarhead (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (106.94dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (9Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.63dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: Some content around 10Hz, but otherwise mostly 30Hz and above. PvA:
  22. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (109.02dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (28.79dB) Execution - 4 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Lots of "midbass slam," with other moments below 20Hz, but never any effects with full-bandwidth content. PvA:
  23. Windtalkers (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 3 Stars (108.19dB composite) Extension - 1 Star (32Hz) Dynamics - 3 Stars (24.78dB) Execution - 2 Stars (by poll) Overall - 2.25 Stars Recommendation - Rent (by poll) Notes: This one's severely high-passed. Reminds me of Battleship in its measured extension. The sound designers couldn't even preserve the mix's dynamics? What a turd! PvA:
  24. The Raid 2: Berandal (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 4 Stars (111.14dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (31.16dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 4.25 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: While it's an improvement over the bass in the first one, aside from a few long narrow-bandwidth tones, this one's content is mostly above 30Hz until the very end credits. The one scene that has those hot tones extends to DC, giving this its 1Hz extension rating. Besides that, and the associated narrow effects at 19Hz, this is mildly rolled off from 30Hz. I measured the Indonesian 5.1 DTS-HD MA track. PvA:
  25. The Raid: Redemption (5.1 DTS-HD MA) Level - 2 Stars (107.09dB composite) Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz) Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.92dB) Execution - 3 Stars (by poll) Overall - 3.75 Stars Recommendation - Buy (by poll) Notes: Stuff not associated with on-screen action garners this one it's 5 star extension rating. Otherwise, it's a 30Hz movie with almost no big effects or serious content below that. PvA:
