San Andreas - Dolby Atmos (TrueHD 7.1 Analyzed)

Level - 5 Stars (113.79 dB composite)

Extension - 2 Stars (21Hz)

Dynamics - 3 Stars (23.82dB)

Execution - TBD

Overall - TBD

Recommendation - TBD

Comments - High SPL and rolled off (like Thor and Pacific Rim), but ZERO clipping (unlike Thor and Pacific Rim).  This is non-dynamic, filtered high SPL done right.  Good to see a a clean presentation in a loud film.  I'm sure significant digital compression was used as from a zoomed out-perspective, I expected to see clipping at -0.5dB everywhere, but no flat-tops were found upon closer inspection.

Not the best movie, but the audio was well done I thought. I thought it might go lower, so that's a bit disappointing. I do own it, but voted to rent.

I agree with you Rowan611 so so movie audio was nice but I wished it had more extention in the low end, I figured for what the movie was about it would be all about ULF.

I wasn't all that impressed with this audio track for whatever reason. It reminded me of STID in the fact that it was just so LOUD, LOUD, LOUD which is reinforced by the dynamics score. At least it is a clean loud I suppose unlike STID.

Star Trek 2009 showed you can have a 5-Star level, >30dB dynamics and a relatively clean presentation all in one film.

ST 2009 is one of my favorite audio tracks. Wish STID would have had the same sound design as the 2009 film.

I'm not laying money either way on whether the next one will be good or bad in the sound department!

I do wish the directors and sound people on these films could visit Bosso and the other big systems with single digit Hz playback, to really understand what they should be mixing (and so they can suffer ST:ID at the level they inflict on us if we're trying to listen to it properly!)

Someone please tell me the reasoning behind putting a filter on the soundtrack to a movie about an earthquake.

First post edited to read non-dynamic and filtered high SPL done right.  BTW, I only mean clean presentation in the fact that there are no flat-tops.  Lots of compression or soft limiting does beat flat tops, but not by much.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating here.  After all it's just a fun earthquake movie with the Rock and there are plenty of worse soundtracks for bass.  I just imagine the guy behind the mixing console who was looking at footage of a city crumbling and figured, "HPF at 20Hz makes sense for this one."  Blows my mind.

First of all, they don't think like that.

Second, because they are doing playback on a system like a cinema usually has which is many ported 18's tuned in the 25-30hz range. Pretty much every cinema on the planet is set up like that.

That's why.

They would just point you back to the AVS review where the film is given a 100 out of 100 for audio:

Something tells me Ralph Potts loves compressed pop and techno music, because this film is the equivalent.

The dam burst scene was really quite incredible, and a cut above the rest of the film in my opinion (as far as fun audio intensity) - having just watched it a couple nights back.
