I know it is made for freq ranges above what we mainly discuss here, but it is impressive.  Is it worth the high $ pricetag, though?

I would never pay retail but you can find them around for far cheaper. Makes a pretty good vented system and has a nice top end that can meet a mid driver well into the mid bass. It is still a nice versatile driver.

What's so good about this driver? The output numbers are pathetic. Even the midbass output is weak, comparable to a good 12 or 15'' driver.

I'm guessing this driver performs much better in a vented enclosure.

Definitely!! Just take a look at the jbl 4645 that uses this driver. Pretty massive output for a single 18 in a ported cab.
