First post updated with a mini tutorial on how to read peak/average graphs, and how the rating system works.

The way you guys are turning the movie bass into objective based measurements should be applauded by all.

Wow. This is fantastic work.

Updated post #2 in this thread to also show how to read the waterfall graphs, included a link to download SL and my settings and how to make the movie graphics for anyone who wants to learn and pitch in...

Nice update to post #2. I updated post #1 to include an index at the bottom of the post to reach ratings and screencaps for each film within the thread.

Figured out a way to do what Ricci does with the sub measurements:

Attached File  MaxMin.PNG   20.33KB   20 downloads

It will be easy to add a particular film to it to see how it compares with best and worst.....also can do this with dynamics.

Max are those SPL levels representative? 140dB?

No, they are power levels per octave, in dBHz. I calculate the 'area under the curve' for each octave. I think more people would like dBHz than PaHz, so I am going with dBHz for graphing. All area calculations are done in PaHz, and converted to dBHz for graphing. Basically, if you were to add the sound pressure of each 1Hz bin for an entire octave, and add them all together, then convert to dB, you'd get the numbers shown above. Since the upper bass octaves comprise more 1Hz bins, the numbers are generally higher as you go up each octave.

Just a thought I am throwing out here, is to start another thread were all could discuss the execution or the buy/rent upon seeing the graphs and data here. As this is somewhat subjective and could keep this thread for the data goods.

If this thread becomes too bogged down with subjective argument, a new thread would be perfect. Since I will be indexing on the first page (as I get time), it should be OK for now.

Great job guys, I've been following along.

I've always been interested in spectral weight, especially the relative spectral weight of certain scenes to be used for system evaluation and proper gain structure.

So thanks to all involved.

This Spidey edition was fun. The low end was not a top tier level (for me, we shall see when Max puts up the graphs and ratings, which I will update the post with), but since there was no single credited Sound Designer, I had to dig deeper and found Distortion Music & Sound did the sound design for this and many other great MWB, which is the good that came from graphing it.

The low end is good and where it needs to be. It's not filtered, with shotgun blasts and wind effects going all the way down.

Max, AWESOME: Star Trek. I have tons of graphs for this one, but they lack the top and side graphs. Dunno if I'll do them over or use what I have, given the amount of time req'd to do each movie. Either way, it's on it's way, so look for it this week.

BTW... I slowed the scroll speed for the Spidey/Lizard Dude fight scene to get more of it in the graph rather than do 3 or more graphs, in case anyone is wondering why it looks different.

I'll do that from time to time rather than cut a great scene off partially done, so if you see the squeezed effect, you'll know why it's so.

Here's Batman Begins:

Level - 3 Stars (108.47dB composite)
Extension - 5 Stars (1Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (27.51dB)
Execution - 4 Stars - While the LF was well done, I can think of many better, hence the 4-Stars.

Overall - 4.25 Stars

Recommendation - Rent, if you are fan of Nolan's Batman, Buy.

The Dark Knight:

Level - 4 Stars (110.24dB composite).
Extension - 5 Stars (1 Hz)
Dynamics - 5 Stars (30.24dB)
Execution - 4 Stars - More 10-20Hz effects would have been nice. Great soundtrack overall.

Overall Rating - 4.5 Stars

Recommendation - Buy
